Whether you’re planning your trip to Australia, have just landed in Oz or have been working your arse off to save your dollars, The Big Walkabout with Contiki is your chance to see just what the big deal is with Australia. Over 24/25 days, you’ll get to stand upon its great landscapes, take part in amazing activities and snap thousands of photos on this mega adventure, all while making new friends along the way.
It’s likely that you’ll have heard of some of the destinations on this trip, but some will come as a complete surprise. You’ll come to learn their multiple nicknames, like Uluru, which can also be referred to as Ayers Rock or The Red Rock, in the Northern Territory. You’ll experience the sheer size and changing sceneries as you travel from beautiful blue East Coast views to just-as-beautiful Red Centre desert (or vice versa, depending on where you choose to start).
You’ll explore the bustling city of Sydney in New South Wales, with its Opera House, Harbour Bridge and urban beaches, and compare it to the tropical city of Cairns in north Queensland, and the even more tropical city of Darwin in the Northern Territory. As well as the major cities, you’ll visit coastal towns like Surfers Paradise, Byron Bay and Coffs Harbour, and outback settlements like Katherine, Alice Springs and Tennant Creek. There will also be opportunities to head off of the mainland to step upon the paradise islands of The Whitsundays and Fraser.
As with any Contiki trip, there are plenty of things to do in each location that are included or available to add on. After all, you can tick off much of that pesky bucket list right here in Australia. So what do you feel like doing? Swimming in secret rock pools in the middle of a national park? Taking a 4WD ride of Fraser Island? Or how about diving with saltwater crocodiles or skydiving from 15,000ft? There are activities for every type of traveller – from the daredevil who seeks adrenaline to the chill-out character who would rather lie on a beach. If you’re undecided, the Contiki team that will be with you all the way can lend advice on things to do (and encouragement when needed), and you can bet your fellow passengers will have a few ideas up their sleeves.
Even accommodation and meals are well thought-out. Over the length of the trip, you’ll be staying in hotels, resorts, lodges, hostels, a cattle station, a surf school village and an outback bush camp. You’ll also be fed 34 meals in total, because you’re gonna need that fuel for all the fun you’re gonna have. Oh, and don’t let the name mislead you; you’ll also have a big, air-conditioned Contiki coach to sit in (you’d wear through too many shoes if you had to actually walk it).
The Big Walkabout has many options for travel. You can start from Sydney and finish in Darwin, start in Darwin and finish in Sydney, and you can even book it with two days of sailing in the Whitsundays. If you’ve been longing to really see this great, big country, then this is the trip for you. It’s what you came all this way for and it’s what will make your time in Australia all that more incredible.
The Big Walkabout is one of many Contiki Holidays Australian trips from 3-25 days. If you’ve only got a few weeks to travel or if you’re looking to experience Australia and make new friends along the way, definitely consider organised group travel as an option. It’s great to share your experiences with like-minded people, and even better if they’re with you for the ride.
