Emilie Sande Debut Knocks Lana Del Rey from Top Spot
2012 Brit Award nominee and Critics Choice winner Emeli Sandé tops off what has been an incredible twelve months for the Scottish singer/songwriter and former medical school student. Her debut studio album, Our Version Of Events, this week topples reigning queen Lana Del Rey from the UK Official Albums Chart throne, as well as becoming 2012’s second fastest-seller so far in the UK – smashing the 100k sales barrier with a first week sale of over 113,000 copies.
With major support already from the Nova Network, Max and Channel [V] in Australia, the album features the single ‘Heaven’ and the more recent single, ‘Next To Me’. ‘Next To Me’ is currently iTunes Australia Single of the Week.
‘Next To Me’ is yet another flawless track, a hypnotic pop classic full of soaring emotion and heartfelt lyrics. At first glance, it could be about a boy, or even perhaps be spiritual in its sentiment. In fact, says Emeli, it was written about her number one love; Music, ‘You won’t find him drinking under tables/ Rolling dice and staying out till 3/ You won’t ever find him being unfaithful/ You will find him next to me.
On the album front, Our Version Of Events is just getting started and makes its debut this week at No. 46 on the official ARIA chart.
Like classic debut albums before it, Sandé’s debut is a moment in musical time. Credible without attempting to be too ‘cool,’ heartbroken yet crazy in love, it is considered without trying to be too clever. This is a distinctly British record with undeniable global appeal, created by one of the most exciting debut artists we have seen in recent years.
