Catch Up Our exclusive Interview with Emma Louise!!!
Having featured on some of the biggest dance tracks in recent years alongside Flight Facilities and Wankelmut, we catch up with dance music’s darling, Emma Louise to find out more about her and her music ahead of her huge Australian tour.
How are you today? Where are you right now and what have we dragged you away from to speak to us?
Haha well I have just got back home to Melbourne. I just made some soup and am eating that. It’s pumpkin soup. But I am eating the soup and doing this so you haven’t dragged me away too much!
You first popped up on our radar in the UK with your tune with Wanklemut and you’ve since collaborated with Flight Facilities and released several great tracks. What would you say has happened in recent years to really put Australians on the map for more electronic music?
Yes. It was strange because I wrote and released ‘Jungle’ a few years before it was remixed by Wankelmut. So it was like going on another ride again with that song. The remix was awesome because it helped people find my music. I think that’s a great way to expand your listening pool.
You have a really calming voice, and your tracks are somewhat stripped back, what are your personal influences? Who do you like to listen to?
At the moment I am listening to a lot of Tobias Jesso Jr. He’s a great songwriter from Canada. I love Bon Iver and Joni Mitchell at the moment too.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
From feelings. From people and experiences. Sometimes places and senses. It’s all a bit up in the air really.
You have a massive Australian tour coming up this October through to November, where are you most looking forward to playing?
I’m really excited to play this tour. I can’t wait to play the tracks from my new album ‘Supercry’. But I’m also excited about playing some of the old songs too. I love performing.
Any plans for playing overseas anytime soon?
Not yet! As soon as this tour is over I am going to start working on the next album. I may end up record that overseas somewhere.
Who are five of your favourite recording artists?
Tobias Jesso Junior
Bon Iver
Joni Mitchell
Little Dragon
Bjork
Do you play any instruments aside from your voice box?
Yes piano and guitar
You’re originally from Cairns, so what would you say is the best thing for anyone visiting there to do?
Definitely go and check out the Great Barrier Reef and Kuranda. Get out to Port Douglas and Mossman Gorge. It’s so beautiful up there, I feel very lucky to have lived there.
Where do you spend most of your time in Australia and why?
In Melbourne. I guess it’s just a great place to live. I spend a lot of my time bouncing around from city to city anyways because I find it hard to stay still but Melbourne is just a great place to be based. There’s lots going on and it’s beautiful.
What are the three best things for people to see in Australia whilst visiting?
Go to the Great Barrier Reef for sure. Spend a week in Melbourne and hit up all the cafes and shops and soak up the general vibe. Go out to Alice springs. Check out the red desert. It’s so peaceful.
If you’re not performing or recording how do you like to spend your free time?
In my free time I like to hang out with my friends and family. Do solo activities. Explore. Paint and do other things with my hands.
Where’s the most interesting place your singing career has taken you so far?
I spent a bit of time in Mexico a few months ago. That was incredible. I feel very lucky to be able to travel because of music. I was just writing in Mexico. It was amazing.
