A lighthouse keeper may not be everyone’s choice occupation, but imagine waking up to this view every day. Hat Head National Park is an escapist’s paradise, drenched with hidden coastal spots, bright white sand dunes and Smoky Cape lighthouse. At 350km north of Sydney, it’s perfect for a few days’ relaxation away from the city.
Get back to nature by walking the trails of Green Island, Connors, and Jack Perkins tracks. Each rich with vegetation, you might spot the local wildlife drawn to the land, but you will definitely catch a glimpse of the lighthouse. You won’t be stuck for ideas for accommodation, as the lighthouse has its own keeper’s cottage with beautiful views of the ocean, and there are campsites right by the beach if you want to get back to basics with an early morning swim or evening sunset. Birds are high and low from soaring eagles to graceful spoonbills, and as everywhere in Australia, the ocean offers an underwater world of pure marine magic.
The park is located neat to Port Macquarie, a great viewing platform for the whales when the time is right (between March and November), and takes about five hours to drive from Sydney. Take advantage of the dramatic landscape, with the rainforest to the west and beaches to the east and relax in this tropical oasis.
