Experience The Canadian Rockies On An Overnight Train
Travelling from Vancouver in British Columbia to Jasper in Alberta, the two-day train journey through the Canadian Rockies is simply spectacular.
You’ll never experience something so civilised in such wild surroundings. Two days on board the Rocky Mountaineer is split up with a night in a hotel in the city of Kamloops. You only travel during daylight, so you can truly take in the natural beauty. From Vancouver, highlights include Hell’s Gate – a narrow point of the Fraser River where the water gushes aggressively – and the steep slopes and rock sheds the follow the Thompson River. During your night in Kamloops, you can fill up on smoked meats at Cat & Joe’s Pig Rig food truck or pop into the famous Denny’s whatever time of the night. Breakfast and lunch are both served on the train.
During the second day is when you descend onto the Rocky Mountains within Albert. The striking peak of Mount Robson – the highest in the mountain region – is a sight to behold, while the Pyramid Falls is undoubtedly on of the most incredible to be formed. Blindingly white water thrashes against the different levels of craggy rocks to split the stream in a dozen directions. As you head into Jasper National Park, the Rocky Mountaineer embarks on the climb over the Yellowhead Pass – a mountain pass that signifies the continental divide between Alberta and British Columbia.
The alpine town of Jasper is in keeping with the wild nature that surrounds it. Amongst the Canadian Rockies, Jasper National Park is brimming with wildlife, glacier lakes, forests and rivers. As you can never get bored of these views, jump on the Jasper SkyTram – the highest and longest aerial tramway in Canada – for a journey that carries you to an elevation of 2,277 metres.
