Fabric Live 58 Mixed by Goldie Touring Oz
London superclub ‘Fabric’ have pulled off a musical masterstroke acquiring the services of cultural legend Goldie as curator on their lastest Live album.
The Farringdon favourite’s latest release ‘Fabric Live 58′ sees the godfather of drum n’ bass create a stunning, dynamically diverse mix full of welcome surprises. The album is partially a pedestal for talent on his iconic Metalheadz label ( now in its 18th year ), but that is mainly because the label has always stood for progression, innovation and expression, and each track justifies its place. The resurgent Goldie has in fact selected artists from a number of labels and sub genres into a mix that takes you on a ‘light to dark and back again’ journey of relevant, contemporary drum and bass.
The album kicks off with Rido feat. ‘Thomas Oliver’ and the soulful ‘Twisted’ , going beautifully into the atmospherically heavy ‘Celestial Navigation’. Goldie takes great care here in showcasing the musicality of contemporary drum and bass, taking us through Lenzman, Mutated Forms, Adam F, Jubei, Wickaman and JMajik and, unlike a number of other mix heavy compilations, allowing the songs to breathe and give the listener time to appreciate the song and its production.
Where Fabric Live 58 succeeds is in replicating the pulse and beat of the modern cosmopolitan UK city, focusing on tracks that display just how important and influential the genre has become. The end of the album perfectly accents this when Goldie brings in the classic ‘Timeless’, sounding as fresh as it did in the mid 90’s and rounding off an album that is suitable for fans and new listeners alike.
Goldie created his debut album, the immaculate ‘Timeless’ on his Metalheadz imprint, in 1995. 16 years later, the sentiment rings true: it sounds remarkably more progressive and idiosyncratic than ever. ‘Timeless’ as a concept defines who Goldie is, in every sense of the word. Decades from now, his music, art, charismatic gold smile (remnants of his teenage days as an alchemist, selling gold teeth in New York) and larger-than-life aura will still intrigue and confound even the most jaded of historians.
Goldie will be touring Australia to promote this Fabric Live 58 compilation this coming Sepetember. Below is a list of venues where you can catch this Drum and Base legend.
