Plan for some extra time

Farmers are mostly at the mercy of weather patterns. It might take more than just 3 months to complete your farm work visa days. You can’t pick fruit amidst a thunderstorm. Hence, don’t hatch an unrealistic plan of working every day. Plan to work for close to 4 months, just to be on the safe side. Start looking for work early?

If you wish to stay in Australia for another year, begin researching farm jobs as soon as possible. You can do this leisurely. And we mean at your own pace. First of all, search for seasonal job opportunities in each region. Then look into individual farms and contact recruitment companies online. You can ask fellow travellers and those who have been through the grind before. This way, you will have plenty of time and information to avoid disappointment or worse.

Trust instincts and embrace the opportunity

You would not want to spend 3 to 4 months in a place you hate. Pick a farm that truly makes you feel at home. Moreover, it is important to view your farm work as an opportunity and not a chore. No doubt, you will learn about a different side of life, and meet lots of new people.

Be aware of the risks and hazards of farm work

Farm work is not all about picking luscious fruit in an idyllic land. Although Australia’s farmlands are stunning, there are hidden dangers. But, you can easily avoid these hazards if you know what to look for. You have to watch out for wildlife such as snakes, scorpions and centipedes.  Other hazards include weather related incidents such as heat stroke and hypothermia. You should also watch out for hazardous chemicals and equipment.

Get to know the area and the farm

The best possible way to avoid danger is to be informed. Before you sign up for any job, research the area and the farm. We recommend getting to know as much as possible about your employer. Do they practice safe workplace standards? Do they provide necessary training? Do they provide safety equipment? Once you find out all you need about potential dangers, get the gear you need. You might need gloves, a good sun hat, and even long sleeves for long days in the sun. You should also take a sleeping bag for cold nights, and perhaps a trusty guide book.
