fiN: ‘Rapture’ – Single Review
South London schoolmates turned bandmates fiN are aiming for the big time. If you don’t believe me, have a quick look at their Facebook page. It says as much:
“There are no rules,” frontman Luke Joyce opines, in typical rock ‘n’ roll fashion. “Throw away the rulebook. You want to aim as high as you can, and that’s what we’re going to do. If you aim at impossible you’re always going to end up better than if you just aim for somewhere logical.”
With that Coldplay/Oasis-esque battle statement in mind, I clicked on to YouTube to listen to the band’s upcoming single, Rapture.
The song begins with a throbbing bassline not a million miles away from Radiohead’s ‘The National Anthem,’ and then after a seconds respite, kicks in with a predictable heavy drums and fuzzy guitar attack very much in the vein of one of the band’s primary influences, The Smashing Pumpkins.
Despite a few drawbacks (namely the awful, cliché laden lyrics), the song is a disarmingly goofy and fun pop/rock song, with a bridge and sing-along chorus that even Bono might be envious of. You can certainly see fiN having a good future as a commercial rock band.
