Flow Festival
Flow Festival announces new additions to the festival’s line up. These include the Swedish artist Lykke Li, making her only Nordic appearance of the year at Flow, Bola, the Ghanaian hiplife artist on the Awesome Tapes From Africa label, the Turkish artists BaBa Zula, Kolektif Istanbul and DJ Murat Meric, the Detroit techno scene stalwart Theo Parrish, the Italian inventor of “Cosmic Disco”, Daniele Baldelli, and the Finnish reggae greats Bongo Rock, performing together with the Jamaican Studio One legend Cornell Campbell. Other new acts on the Flow bill are Arch of Neo, Roberto Rodriguez, Mika Snickars and the DJs performing at Flow’s atmospheric Backyard venue. The We Love Helsinki collective also presents their traditional Flow Backyard dance party, this time around with stand up and children’s program on Sunday.
The festival also announces new features in design, visual arts, films, architecture and talks. On the design front, Flow will present the festival area entry installation, “Fountain”, designed by the award-winning Harri Koskinen / Friends of Industry Ltd, the festival’s Visual artist of the year Tuomas Aleksander Laitinen’s work “Passage”, and the unique Wastelands stage, presented in co-operation with the architectural assembly related to the Helsinki World Design Capital 2012 program.
Films presented the festival are all premiere screenings in Finland. The documentary “Marley” takes a close look into the life of reggae legend Bob Marley, “SubBerlin” showcases the evolution of the Berlin electronic music scene through one of its key entities, Tresor club, and “Sounds and Silence” takes a peek into the globe-trotting everyday life of influential jazz label ECM’s mastermind Manfred Eicher. Additionally, Flow will premiere the film “7 Heaven Love Ways” directed by world-renowned designer Paola Suhonen. Suhonen’s film also features music by singer-songwriter Chip Taylor, who will also perform live at the screening. Flow will also continue the Film Garage residency of Future Shorts, a short film concept bringing the freshest of new short film talent to the fore.
The program of Flow Talks initiated last year will continue expanding at the premises at Restaurant Lämpö on site. This year’s Talks feature Red Bull Music Academy’s artist workshops, the international Festival Panel, a discussion on the Wastelands stage plus space in relation to performance, and other Talks to be added later.
In addition, Flow has released this year’s on site restaurants. Once again the range of restaurants presented include the festival team’s favourite tastes in Helsinki cuisine.
With the new additions, the Flow web site also presents a newly functional Program page with options for customised browsing.
More program additions are to be announced during the spring and early summer, including “The Other Sound” concept for experimental music. The ninth Flow Festival will be organised in Helsinki’s Suvilahti on August 8-12 2012.
