Foals Release New Album 'What Went Down'
Today, Foals release their fourth album, ‘What Went Down’. One of Britain’s most influential and powerful guitar bands, the Oxfordshire five-piece are said to be very proud of the new material, which looks set to rival the success of its predecessors.
‘What Went Down’ is the first single and title track off the new album, and it certainly is a massive, evocative creation, sure to guarantee Foals’ position as one of Britain’s most illustrious bands. Theatrical in its delivery, powerful, frenetic and magnetic, this track arouses dark emotions, mimicking being sucked into the blackest depths of an abyss. ‘What Went Down’ is the most visceral song from Foals to date; it signals the return of a band who made their name in 2006 playing at house parties, and who, six years later, in 2013, morphed into UK festival headliners.
For this new album, Foals have blurred music talents with producer James Ford (Arctic Monkeys, Florence & The Machine, Jessie Ware, Mumford & Sons) and escaped to the rustic charm of South of France to record in a rural 19th-century mill. By magically combining the sounds conveying depths of madness with the beautiful pop quality the band can also achieve, this album portrays some of the most beautiful and elegant songs the band has ever crafted.
Showing a deeper side through the lyrics, the tracks deal with themes around cultural identity, generational anxiety, cynicism, pessimism and heartbreak; “I wanted to tap into my inner madman and feel like I was channeling some sort of fevered creature”, frontman Philippakis explains. The tone created is provocative, but also underlies a demonic and destructive vibe.
