Germany Humanitarian Aid Gaza Effort Grows with E3 Support
Germany to Airlift Aid into Gaza Amid Escalating Humanitarian Crisis
Emergency Response from Berlin
Germany has announced plans to begin airlifting humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip as the humanitarian situation worsens. Chancellor Friedrich Merz made the statement after an emergency session of the German cabinet. The move signals a shift in Berlin’s approach to the crisis in the Israeli-occupied region.
“We know this can only be a small help, but it’s a contribution we’re ready to make,” Merz told reporters.
Joint Effort with E3 and Jordan
The aid operation will be carried out in cooperation with Jordan. France and the UK, Germany’s partners in the informal E3 alliance, are also “willing” to participate. The announcement follows rising international pressure on Israel to allow more aid into Gaza and agree to a ceasefire.
France Pushes Further, Germany Holds Back
French President Emmanuel Macron recently declared that France would recognise a Palestinian state by September. Germany and the UK have declined to follow suit, focusing instead on collective measures and diplomatic strategies through the E3 framework.
Plans for a Gaza Reconstruction Conference
Merz revealed that the E3 would start preparing a Gaza Reconstruction Conference to support rebuilding efforts and explore long-term solutions. This initiative aims to create room for a negotiated resolution to the conflict.
Germany Considers Sanctions on Israel
When questioned about possible sanctions on Israel, Merz did not rule them out. He noted that Germany “reserves the right” to take steps such as halting arms exports or supporting the suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement. This marks a potential shift in Germany’s previously cautious stance, especially following an EU review that found Israel in breach of human rights commitments.
