Get A Job In Construction In Australia
If you’re thinking about extending your time in Australia, then Construction is a good way to help secure your visa. We speak to Steve Shepherd at Randstad, about how they can help get you a job in the construction industry.
What is the condition of the Australian Construction industry in terms of job opportunities for all roles from on-site to administrative positions? Is there a large demand for workers?
Through the second half of last year we saw an increase in design and architecture roles and we
expect job demand to flow in to the trades and services sector in the coming months. Master Builders Association is reporting hiring intentions amongst its members to be at a seven year high and it is likely that the recent cut in interests rates will further support the domestic building market.
If someone was just starting to consider pursuing construction in Australia, what advice would you give them?
Think carefully, do your research, and identify where the jobs are for your skills. If you’re in civil
construction it is likely that the work is in remote areas rather than cities so are you prepared for
the life style that goes with it? Next get your visa and qualifications recognised and then consider
taking the risk and moving here without a job as it is unlikely with the amount of available talent in the sector already in Australia that a company will wait for you to organise a move when they are looking for people now, unless your skills are very rare and sought after.
Is there any specific criteria that construction workers need to meet to secure work? For example, are there specific qualifications/ certificates an individual needs to work in the Australian Construction Industry?
They will need the appropriate safety tickets which can be organised here but I recommend they make sure they get all of their qualifications recognised by Australia before they travel as this will impact their employability and limit their ability to work here. Info can be found at www.australia.gov.au/topics/education-and-training/qualifications-and-skills-recognition
For inbound construction job applicants, are Randstad able to secure a job before they arrive in Australia? Would they be able to finalise the placement while they are still in the UK?
In the current climate unless they have very rare skills and experience this is unlikely as post the mining boom in Australia there are a lot of construction workers who have come back in to the job market so it is not that hard to find local talent who are available to start right away.
What methods do Randstad use for promoting the available construction position to the right candidates?
We promote all our jobs in construction on the Randstad website www.randstad.com.au/jobseekers in addition we use Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook.
What’s the best way for people to keep up to date with the latest job vacancies?
The best way to keep notified about jobs in their sector is to go on to the website and register to receive job alerts www.randstad.com.au/ jobseekers/job-alert by doing this they will be notified via email every time a new job is posted that matches their profile.
What are the most common enquiries by new arrivals in Australia or people looking for construction work through Randstad?
Will the client sponsor my visa, how does the Superannuation system work, do I need to get medical insurance, do I need to join a union and questions around transportation as new arrivals generally don’t have a good geographic knowledge of the city or the region.
