Get Messy At The Wine Fight

A lesser-known festival in Haro, La Rioja, The Wine Fight (or San Vino if you’re local), is one of the fiercest battles going. Prepare to fight until you’re wet and weary and paint the hills with red wine until you can take no more. The fight itself takes place on 29th June, but you can spend three days enjoying the festivities with Stoke Travel.

The night before the fight, the village of Haro hosts street parties with bar hopping, dancing and food all night until sunrise. Then it’s a 7am start with locals and tourists marching up the hill, clad in white, and carrying jugs, bottles, water pistols and anything that can possibly be filled with red wine. Reaching the Cliffs of Bilibio, all niceties are put aside for a mass free-for-all with a bottomless supply of red wine. Throw it over everyone you see, friends and strangers, until all you see is a sea of wet, purple shirts.

When you’re drenched from head to toe, head back down the hill to the Stoke Travel bus and get refreshed back at camp. Take a shower, laze by the pool, chill on the grass in the sunshine and get ready for one last party at night.
