Berhnoft and the Fashion Bruises
Grammy nominated Berhnoft and the Fashion Bruises give us a touring band’s perspective on food and travel Grammy-nominated band Bernhoft & the Fashion Bruises’ have released album title track ‘Humanoid’ ahead of the release of their latest full length (available August 24th).
Having been nominated for best RnB album at the Grammys, and with live appearances on Ellen and Conan, Bernhoft & the Fashion Bruises must be doing something right. Humanoid is an attempt to reconnect with humanity in a world overrun with technology.
Bernhoft tells us “so much current music is computerized and machinelike. I felt like I should go the other way and create human music again. It says something about the man-and-machine relationship. You’ll see people at dinner or in a café staring at their screens and not acknowledging each other. I’m trying to find people, but I can’t see them behind their screens.”
In the spirit of human connection, Bernhoft has given us some top real-life places to eat and watch bands, as well as insight into his own musical influences.
What has been your favorite live performance to date and why?
Well, as a member of the audience, it was Roy Haynes trio in 2000. It was an instrumental jazz gig ending in an ethereal singalong. All of the 200 people in the room started out as strangers and ended up best friends. Out of my own gigs, it’s difficult to top the first time I played NYC; it was a small room packed with people who surprised me by knowing all my unreleased songs, which they sang for me better than I could do myself. I could just shut up and play that guitar. They made me feel like a million dollars, which is substantially more than the same amount in Norwegian kroner.
Give us 5 current artists you would recommend we listen to right now (any genre you like)
Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Leon Ware, Jordan Rakei, Emilie Nicolas, ELO. A tad eclectic both in time and genre, but you’ll become a better person lending them your ears.
Who were you most influenced by when writing ‘Humanoid’?
It must’ve been my two sons. The younger was born in the process, seeing as it’s a classic artist-worrying-about-the-future-theme on the album, I guess it’s fair to see it as mere narcissism by proxy. But then the people involved in Brexit and the US election in ’16 also spawned some thoughts. In very different ways, so did Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen. And Sly Stone. Always.
What was the best pub/bar/club you’d recommend for anyone heading through Norway?
You can’t go wrong with Bar Boca in Oslo’s Grünerløkka. Been a fixture for ages, superb drinks!
Where’s the best place / what’s the best dish you’ve eaten on tour?
Bean and cheese burrito at Cactus on Hollywood and Vine in LA! Tiny little taco stand, I have never played LA without eating there post show.
Do you prefer city life, or getting to escape into nature?
I am useless in the wild. I wish I had more connection with nature, but I just feel lost. Tarmac and concrete, lorries and stairs, now that’s culture.
When was the last time you had a proper holiday and where did you go?
I went to Japan during easter! It was fabulous, and the first such proper holiday for years. Japanese coffee! Magahd must go back…
