Hiring a Campervan – Pitfalls and Things to Watch Out for

Follow us on Google News

Travelling in a campervan can mean the epitome of freedom for you!  You explore as much as you like or as little as you like in every passing mile! You save on accommodation and be part of a great camper community. However, there are some things to watch out when you hire a campervan. They are as follows;

Height of the Campervan

Always knowing the height of your campervan will help you not end up getting stuck in a car park or drive through.  Most of the rooftop damages are not covered by travel insurance or excess reduction packages. As such you will end up with a heavy bill.

Travel Insurance

Most of the personnel travel insurance policies cover illness, cancellation of your trip, delays, loss or damage of possessions, travel documents, and personal liability or accidents.  However, they don’t cover motor vehicles or any kind of campervans. If you unfortunately have an accident, you will have to cover the excess which is usually several thousand dollars!

Hire Insurance

Make sure your rental vehicle is insured so that you don’t get a nasty surprise in case of damage.  Arrange a cheaper insurance provider yourself as insurance offered directly by car rental companies are more expensive. Depending on the scope of cover, cheap insurance costs from AUS $ 9.30 to AUS $ 29.70 per day. This is almost half of what you get to pay when the rental company arranges it for you!

Things to Watch Out For!

  1. Before you sign the contract, inspect your campervan and look for damages (interior, engine etc.)
  2. Read your rental contract carefully to ensure there is no hidden fees.
  3. Photograph existing scratches and minor damages.
  4. Double check that the vehicle corresponds to the model you booked.  If the model you booked is no longer available and you get a different model, make sure you get upgraded.
  5. Ask for user directions regarding electronics, bed, charging system etc. and make sure that everything works fine.
  6. Get maps of the area you want to drive and find out about the toll procedure.
