Honeymilk Interview

Follow us on Google News

Honeymilk are a Swedish psychedelic/indie-rock act from Stockholm. The heads behind the musicianship are made of Marcus, Nikki, Tomas and Erik who have been compared to the likes of The Strokes, Wilco and Velvets. They’re about to release their new single Psychrocker, and we’ve had a chance at having a short but sweet catch up interview with them.

For those who are not familiar with your music, can you tell us what Honeymilk is about?
Honeymilk has become more of a collective due to a series of member-changes. Steady members are Marcus and Nikki with Erik and Tomas now adding their zest to the group. We’re about doing the only thing that seems to make life worth living: creating music and having a good time.

When did you know you wanted to be in a band and what/who influenced you all?
Well, I wanted to be in a band at the same time I wanted to start making friends, when I was 16. But I’ve always wanted to play music. I think I speak for everyone – music is what we know how to do. Influences are everywhere but I think one scene that has been a common ground is the 90’s scene. Then we add a lot of other stuff as well.

What’s the most memorable music-related memory of yours and why?
Collectively I think it was when we were praised by Q-Magazine and we realised we’d actually made a really, really good song (A Scene In Between) and those times when people come up to you and say what they think. They don’t have to do that, but for some reason we’ve touched them, either in a good or bad way, and they want to let us know. I like that. Personally it was when I was five and I met the Swedish eurodisco-king E-type at Visby Airport.

If you weren’t making music, you’d be…
I think all of us are addiction and adrenalin-junkies so we’d either pave a lot of concrete or scam elderly people.

What have you got to offer that other acts/bands out there don’t and why?
Honestly? Well I mean we’ve been through a lot of trouble but we’ve stuck together and we got each other’s backs and created music for the sole love to it. We’re also good at mixing various styles and personal tastes. It doesn’t come without fights and yelling and making up, but usually turns out really well.

Can you tell us about your new single Psychrocker. How did the song come about and is it a typical sound for you?
NIkki had this melody that we tried. We then changed it a couple of times and it is where it is now. I wouldn’t say it’s a typical Honeymilk-song, it’s just a song about hypocrisy and posing with one guitar that sound like MBV, one that sound like disco-outfit from Kansas and drums that sound like… I don’t know. Good anyway. De Montevert blessed us with her voice as well.

What kind of fan base are you targeting and what kind of message are you trying to convey to the world?
Fan-base is anyone who wants to like us. The message in this song was supposed to be ironic about the rest of the music scene. Then we ended up being ironic about ourselves.

Describe your music in 3 words.
Beaches, G&T and coldness.

Do you prefer the recording process or performing live and why?
After the single out, what’s next for Honeymilk?
Live. Live. Live.

After the single’s out, what’s next for Honeymilk?
We’re recording a couple of new songs in the winter, and they’re sounding really fucking good.
