Hophaus: Melbourne’s Modern German Bier Hall
Melbourne announces its modern German Bier Hall in the iconic Southbank location.
Head on over to the Southbank to experience the brand new food and beverage show piece where Melbourne gets merged with the European styles of Munich. The Hophaus describes itself as “a delightfully familiar, yet excitingly fresh food and beverage experience.” as it is the reinvention, in a cosmopolitan style, of your usual Bavarian Beir Halls.
Food
The interior of Hophaus boasts an expansive dining hall that has a centred bar and an open rotisserie fired kitchen that is art deco inspired. If you’re dropping in for your lunch or sitting down for an enjoyable evening of dining there isn’t a better place on Melbourne’s Southgate to be than at Hophaus. Its focused on shared dining with its menu offering your favourite Bavarian classics that are given a Melbourne flavour to them.
The Executive Chef, Marc Brown says of the menu that it is “Uncomplicated, nothing too fussy or overly sauced, just good honest food that will keep you coming back for more” The menu for your lunch, dinner at light bar snacks include those amazing house smoked meats that are prepared using slow cooking methods and you’re spoiled for choice with either a 250g Prime Sirloin steak that’s served with braised onion, mushroom, smoked cheese, fried potatoes or you can order a meat platter to share with friends. All sourced from victoria, smoked and slow roasted over coal pit. All platters served with sauerkraut, german potato salad and mustard.
You couldn’t ask for anything more. The menu is exciting and fresh that uses those old age cooking styles from Europe. If you’re after something light, then take a peak at the bar menu, that will compliment those easy evenings of light drinking and conversations.
Drinks
Away from the delicious and authentic Bavarian dishes being plated up, the huge main bar is rich in its collection of draught beers. With over 30 of the finest biers sourced from Germany, Austria and Alsace on rotation all the beer lovers won’t get stuck with the same choices. Also in terms of wine, the Hophaus boasts some fantastic New World wines that will go perfectly with those home smoked meats that you’ll have with your meals.
What’s great is that you can mix it up with the tasty cocktails at the bar that range in different flavours but also capture the German essence of what Hophaus is all about. Have a try of the Black Forest Espresso 18 if you’re a fan of cake and coffee or try a German twist on your classic cocktails such as the Hophaus Lagerita 19 & Peach Bier Collins 18.
The architectural designer, Peter Maddison says, “We have taken great delight in crafting a unique interior for this project, which is based on research of European beer halls, and then re-inventing them, so that the materials & finishes are familiar, yet somehow different.
The owner of Hophaus, Paul O’Brien says “We wanted to create a truly one-of-a-kind experience in this iconic location, an experience that delights and surprises yet also feels familiar and hospitable”.
At BBM, we think that Paul has achieved exactly that. There’s a new location to gather your mates and family for a great dining experience as well as those nights where you want to kick back with a couple of beers, glasses of wine or a cheeky cocktail or two!
