A city with a striking beauty, Sydney is one of the best locations in the world for photography. To get the best out of your camera, we spoke to photographer, Michael Morales, for his top tips on taking photographs in Sydney, and to find out why the city has captured his creativity.
Name: Michael Morales
Occupation: IT Professional
Originally From: Philippines; I moved to Sydney almost four years ago.
What is it about Sydney that makes it a dream destination for photography?
Sydney has a lot of areas to take amazing photos. From the iconic landmarks like the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, to the colourful sunrise on the beach, mountain sunsets, expansive national parks, and abandoned areas filled with history – there will always be an interesting place to shoot.
The Harbour Bridge features a lot on your Instagram; what is your favourite photo that you’ve taken of the bridge so far and why?
I’ve taken a lot of photos of the Harbour Bridge and I don’t think I’m stopping anytime soon. It’s such a beautiful subject to photograph. My favourite so far is the one shot during the blue hour. It was raining, but it stopped before the end of the day, and I was looking forward for a vibrant sunset. Unfortunately, it was still too cloudy so I packed my gear and started to walk towards the other side of the bridge. I looked back, and saw the clouds have turned pink and the sky became a vivid shade of blue. It was breathtaking and I just had to take a photo. Even though I wasn’t able to take a sunset shot, I got something better.
What’s your favourite time of day to take photos in Sydney?
Around sunset is my favourite time to shoot. Just after the sun sets, the colour of the sky is amazing. From hues of red and orange to purple and blue, the sky serves as a beautiful background when taking photos of virtually anything!
What activities would you suggest someone do in Sydney in order to get great photos?
Explore. Explore. Explore! There are many stunning places in Sydney that are easily accessible even just by public transport. Take time during weekends to go out, explore, and discover new places – you will be amazed by how geographically diverse Sydney is. Try to go to some place new once a week – even if it’s just exploring new suburbs that you have never been to before. I personally think that the more you appreciate your surroundings, the more you get inspired to take great snaps.
How do you use photography to be creative? For example, the glass ball – where did that idea come from?
I always try to take photos from a different perspective. When I get to a spot, I always think of ways I can capture it uniquely. Using props helps achieve a creative spin on a normal shot. I’ve always been fascinated how a glass ball inverts an image, and it inspired me to use it in some of my shots. It’s actually my favourite photography prop right now. Such a simple object that brings a lot of difference to a photo.
How can someone capture an amazing photo without needing post-production or editing?
Great lighting helps a lot in taking stunning photos straight out of the camera or mobile phone. As much as possible, avoid harsh light (usually during mid-day) so you won’t get hard shadows or washed-out photos. Try to take photos during the ‘golden hour’ – early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the light is soft and diffused. If you’re taking photos during mid-day, find some shade, use a lens filter, or shoot in angle from the light source.
What other parts of Australia have you travelled to? Is there anywhere that you’ve found particularly inspiring?
I’ve travelled for quite a bit around Australia. I’ve been to some places in Queensland, South Australia, New South Wales, and the Northern Territory but my favourite place would be the outback. I’ve gone to the Red Centre and the South Australian outback and it is such an amazing place to explore and shoot. Every area is different and learning about its cultural and historical significance is definitely inspiring. In fact, my recent trip to the outback reignited my passion for photography. I haven’t stopped snapping since.
