Hyper Japan 2014 Review
Going since 2010, Hyper Japan, the UK’s biggest celebration of Japanese culture, took to Earls Court over the course of the weekend. From Friday through Sunday, the best in gaming, anime, manga, J-POP, fashion, and much more was showcased. And after four phenomenal years, this year was not a disappointment.

The event was jam-packed with non-stop excitement As well as the staff that put together this incredible event, the serious effort many guests put into their costumes were simply extraordinary. Many new or popular gaming items were available to use, showcasing Japan’s modern elements, but Hyper Japan also didn’t fail to show the country’s traditional side either: on sale were kimonos, yukatas, and other traditional Japanese clothing of different colours and wondrous designs were available.

(Japanese) Food, glorious food!

Other merchandise on offer consisted of bright and colourful stuffed toys, posters, manga, and games. And, of course, one of the highlights of the event – particularly come lunch hour – was the delicious food. All kinds of different platters were served including ramen, takoyaki and, yes, sushi. Also many popular snacks, such as Pocky, were available to buy at cheap prices.

As always, no social gathering is complete without music, so the DJ compiled a smashing J-POP playlist, and there was also a live performance, courtesy of ONE NOT’E. As if that wasn’t enough, there was even a chance for members of the public to get on stage and try karaoke in front of their loved ones. We didn’t want to embarrass anyone with our Adele-like vocals, so just enjoyed watching…ahem.
Meet SIRO-A, Japan’s answer to the Blue Man Group

Multi-award winning performers SIRO-A made an appearance at the “J-culture” (as the kids call it) event of the year, astounding the audience with a theatrical experience like no other. Often described as Japan’s version of the Blue Man Group, they fuse mime, dance, laser effects, and an Electro soundtrack that brings their performances to life. Performing is their full-time job and they tour all around Europe, including France, Germany and the UK. “Touring around Europe is important to us because we want to see how people outside of Japan react to us,” said one SIRO-A member (they had face paint on, so we’re not entirely sure who we spoke to). Before they became famous award winners, “We practised in any free space we could find, even graveyards.” Lovely.

If you attended or have attended in previous years, you’ll join us in saying what a wonderful event Hyper Japan is. And if you haven’t been, you sincerely missed out. Soz. The organisers promised that next year’s event will be the best and biggest yet, and this year was pretty spectacular, so we cannot wait to see what they have in store. Sayonara ‘til next year, Hyper Japan!
