Interesting Facts About Houtman Abrolhos: Off the western coast of Australia lies the intriguing archipelago of the Houtman Abrolhos, often called the Abrolhos Islands. Following is a list of some fascinating information on this one-of-a-kind site, organised into many sections for simplicity’s sake.

Interesting Facts About Houtman Abrolhos

Geography and Location

West of Geraldton, Western Australia, around 80 kilometres out in the Indian Ocean is the series of 122 islands and coral reefs known as the Houtman Abrolhos. There are three major groups of islands: the Wallabi Group in the north, the Easter Group in the middle, and the Pelsaert Group in the south.

This coral reef system is among the most well-known in the Indian Ocean. It is also one of the few high-latitude reef systems found all over the world. Characterised by reduced light penetration, colder temperatures, and rare plant and animal compositions, high-latitude reef systems are coral reef ecosystems located in regions outside of the usual tropical zone, which is about 30° N and 30° S of the equator.

In the shallow seas that surround Australia’s continental shelf islands, you may find them close to the shelf break, where the depths are much deeper. Marine life is very diverse because of the area’s unusual topography.

Historical Significance

When the Dutch explorer Frederick de Houtman came across the islands in 1619 while cruising for the Dutch East India Company, it was the first time that Europeans saw them. Portuguese sailors would say “open your eyes” to alert other ships of potentially hazardous reefs, which is where the word “Abrolhos” originates.

Shipwrecks

The 1629 Dutch disaster of the Batavia was the most notorious catastrophe in the Houtman Abrolhos. The ship ran aground on Morning Reef, close to Beacon Island, and the survivors staged a mutiny and murder, killing more than a hundred people.

In 1727, on Half Moon Reef, there was another significant wreck: the Zeewijk. Survivors constructed the first ocean-going vessel in Australia, Sloepie, after enduring 10 months of stranding to make their escape.

Sea Life

Because of its position at the meeting point of warmer tropical waters carried by the Leeuwin Current and colder temperate seas, Abrolhos is home to an incredible variety of tropical and temperate marine organisms.

It is one of the most diversified coral reef systems at such high latitudes, with over 194 species of coral.

Australian sea lions and other marine creatures come here to breed, and you may see humpback whales from July to September, when they migrate. Additionally, you may see green turtles and dolphins in these seas.

Avian Life

A major seabird nesting location in Australia, the islands attract around two million seabirds of 35 different species every year. A few examples of the species include the wedge-tailed shearwater, the Caspian tern, the fairy tern, and the lesser noddies.

Terrestrial Fauna

The first people to record the presence of Tammar wallabies were those who managed to escape Batavia and make their home on the islands of East and West Wallabi. One of the first marsupials reported in Australia by Europeans was these wallabies.
