INTERIEW: Lua Sonique
Lua Sonique. With support from the likes of Wonderland, Clash and 1883 Magazine, LUA SONIQUE step out with their first single of 2019. ‘Crossfire’ sees the London trio further develop their distinctive blend of foreboding beats and emotive vocals to create a compelling offering.
Hey LUA SONIQUE – thanks for chatting with us. How did the project LUA SONIQUE start?
Lua Sonique started when we all left University and we finally decided to work together after separately working on very different projects for a while previously.
What’s the most exciting thing that’s happened to each of you this year?
Jordan: Creating new music and being able to work on the live set up.
Alex: In the past year, I would say the best part for me has been moving into a new place where I have been able to set up a new creative space to produce our and my own music.
Sam: I think the most exciting moments that have happened to me this year have been when we’re working on song and it all just clicks and you’re finally happy with the work!
If someone found your music and had never listened before, what could they expect?
It’s a difficult one to explain… to put it simply we’d say its electronic indie.
How do you work together creatively, do you think it influences your style at all?
Alex and Sam normally come up with a bare bones musical idea and swap it between ourselves, and then we all get together in the same room and finish the track where Jordan adds his Vocals into the mix. Our creative process is very much one of experimentation and we think that really influences our style.

Can you tell us the inspiration behind ‘Crossfire’?
We wrote ‘Crossfire’ very quickly, it actually started off as a jam! It’s got lots of ambient elements in it as well as club influences.
When was the last time you guys had a proper holiday and where did you go?
Jordan: I went to Valencia. I fell in love with the gardens and landscape and the food market is the one for tomatoes and cheeky treats.
Alex: My last proper holiday was Chicago.
I was awestruck by the architecture and loved the music scene there!
Sam: Last holiday I took was to Italy it lived up to and exceeded all expectations!
If each of you could collaborate with one artist, alive or dead, who would it be?
Jordan: I would love to jump into the studio with Mr Tophat, his tracks on Robyn’s new record are bananas.
Alex:I would love to collaborate with Supergroup Moderat so I could pick their brains on the stellar drum programming and refined production. They are definitely a big inspiration for me when it comes to making electronic music.
Sam: I’d love to work with Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker, the last album was incredible and had some amazing production and songwriting on it!
Each of you, what is a record you can’t live without?
Jordan: The self-titled album Fever Ray. ‘Coconut’ has one of the best intros I’ve ever heard.
Alex: The record that I can’t live without would be “Man Alive” by Everything Everything. From the first listen I was blown away by their incredible syncopated style and unique vocals.
Sam: I could not live without Washed Out’s first album Within and Without. The last song on that album ‘A Dedication’ is something special!
