Interview: SEFF
A former VIVa Warriors resident with several EPs signed to Steve Lawler’s celebrated label, SEFF can count Jamie Jones, Lee Foss, Richy Ahmed and many more as loyal fans of his productions. He released the huge three-track vinyl release ‘Jack’s Back’ on Hot Creations back in 2014, with his tracks getting regular support from some of the most critically acclaimed DJs on the scene to this date.
Most recently SEFF dropped the two-track ‘Reach EP’ on Swerve Digital, backed up with superb remixes from Hauswerks and Sooney, plus an Arp Trip mix by SEFF himself.
What’s your name and what do you?
I’m Joe and I’m a DJ/Producer that goes mainly under the name of SEFF amongst a few others.
What kind of music do you play? What best describes your sound?
Mainly Underground House and Techno with my own twist, I would say take a listen on my socials as I like to just let the music do the talking itself where possible as it speaks for itself.
What would you say is your biggest influence?
If we’re talking about other artists then I could literally be here all week answering this one as I listen and take influence from a very broad range of genres so for now I would just have to say myself as sad as that may sound.
Where’s the best club you’ve ever played?
This is a real hard one but I will probably have to go with Sankeys Ibiza as I was a resident for Steve Lawler’s VIVA Warriors there for three years and it was amazing week in week out with the best vibes garenteed.
And the best festival?
Probably Sankeys Summer Festival at Studio 338 in London on Saturday just gone it was amazing, make sure you check the next one out.
Where’s the most unique festival you’ve been to and what was so special?
Glastonbury, it goes without saying really the place is just magical in its own right, if you’ve never been then you really need to to experience it.
What was the most difficult festival you ever went to and was it worth it?
I honestly can’t think of any, I’ve had some of the best times ever at festivals with friends I can’t think of anything bad at any which I’ve ever been to so yes very worth it.
Have you ever traveled somewhere that you feel has influenced your life and music that you play/produce?
Yes, Ibiza and Berlin have had a massive influence on my life and my music, but I pretty much have from everywhere that I’ve played I the world too.
Where’s your hometown?
I don’t even live in a town I live in a small village in Cornwall where I can get away from everything and everyone and can actually get some work done without so many interruptions.
What’s your favourite local bar/restaurant/bar/club?
It’s not a club anymore unfortunately the Dance Academy in Plymouth has played a massive part of my life it literally was the best place in the world to get lost in the music.
Where’s your favourite clubbing destination?
Ibiza without doubt followed closely by Berlin.
Is there something you can’t travel without?
Well beyond the blatant records and phone I’d have to say my Macbook as I get a lot of inspiration whilst travelling and I love to get my head stuck into Logic as much as I can so that I can take the ideas into the studio properly when I’m finally home.
What travel destination would you recommend our readers add to their bucket list?
Barrenqila in Colombia was an amazing place to play and the people there are lovely.
Where was the most surprising place you discovered a big music influence?
Watching Jamie Jones play at the top of a crane in Amsterdam was pretty special to say the least.
Where can we see you play over the next few months?
Keep an eye on my socials as there’s a lot coming up but we’re just in the middle of sorting a NZ/AUS tour which I’m very excited about as I’ve never had the chance to do it before.
Anything else you would like to add?
Yes, please feel free to check out my socials and hopefully see you on the dance floor somewhere in the future.
