INTERVIEW: Supernaive echo the loneliness of the overworked on ‘Be My Friend’ visual By merging electronic and acoustic supplements to their arrangements, Parisian trio SUPERNAIVE’s productions are most notable for their versatility. Originally a duo, the Paris and Tokyo-based brothers recently employed Korean singer Na-Kyung Lee to the outfit. SUPERNAIVE are fond of switching up styles from release to release, and sometimes even within the space of a single record where Lee’s rich vocals might provide a centralised swell on one track, while the next part may focus entirely on an array of twists and turns of tumultuous synthesisers, moving with juxtaposed dissonant harmonies, painting the confusion under which the most recent EP “Lions & Pigs” – released back in April – was written under; “the suffocating heat of Paris, drowning in sweat and alcohol”.
Hey Supernaive – welcome to BBM. What’s the most exciting thing that’s happened to you guys so far this year?
Hey BBM! Thanks for having us. This year has been full of surprises, we released our second EP ‘Lions & Pigs’, played our first live show and best of all, we went to Japan to shoot a music video for our track ‘Be my friend’.
For those who haven’t heard your music yet, how would you best describe your sound?
We try making pop music that sounds new, mixing analogic, digital and acoustic sounds together.
How does everyday life in Paris compare with somewhere like Tokyo?
Size-wise, Paris is like a small village compared to Tokyo. However when you live there, you realize that 99% of the city is composed of residential areas with narrow streets and small shops which give it a more local feel than any part of Paris. Also the food is quite cheap so you tend to eat outside most of the time.
How did the project Supernaive materialise?
Before launching Supernaive we had another project called ‘Joy!’. We’d been making music under this name since we were teenagers and felt it was time for us to move on to something new. We grew up!
Where do you tend to write your music, do you think it influences your style at all?
Supernaive echo the loneliness of the overworked on ‘Be My Friend’ visual We make music anywhere we go. Our main studio is in Paris but when we have a laptop with our software on it we’re good to go! Trips are a good way to boost our creativity, but everyday life in Paris can also be inspiring.
When was the last time you had a proper holiday and where did you go?
Last time we travelled together it was in Japan about 8 months ago. We went to Kyushu to relax in some nice onsen in the middle of nowhere. Then we went to an abandoned industrial island called Hashima near Nagasaki, and ended the trip in Yakushima, the island that inspired Hayao Miyazaki to create ‘Princess Mononoke’. It was fantastic!
Who would be your dream collab?
Björk
Name a record you couldn’t live without?
Go Plastic by Squarepusher
