Interview With An Awesome Whitsundays Tour Rep
Imagine not only travelling around the Whitsunday Islands, but living and working in them. That’s precisely what Alyce Carter does with Awesome Whitsundays. Here, she divulges exactly what she gets up to.
Name: Alyce Carter
Role: Sales & Media Coordinator
Town of origin: Melbourne
How long have you been living/working in the Whitsundays region? Two years
What’s the most awesome thing about the Whitsundays to you?
It is having paradise at your doorstep. After travelling Europe for three months I was eager to check out my “own backyard” and so I moved up here and haven’t looked back. The weather is beautiful; its constant warm balmy temperatures makes you feel like you’re on holiday all year long.
Do you have a favourite island or beach?
It would have to be world-famous Whitehaven Beach. You see so many photos of the beach and it’s not until you see it in real life, you see the natural beauty and the stretch of 7km of pure white sands is truly magic. It’s nature at its best and it makes me appreciate where I live every time I visit.
What would you suggest people get up to on Airlie Beach?
Airlie Beach is a buzzing little beach town, it has really gone ahead in the last two years and there are some great restaurants along the esplanade. You can’t go past a visit to the Airlie Beach lagoon
to relax in the sun and at night a cocktail at one of the outdoor bars. I’m a regular at Breeze Bar where you’ll find the best espresso martinis.
What’s the best thing you’ve ever spotted while snorkelling in the Whitsundays?
Every time I snorkel I can’t help but be amazed by the underwater marine life. I always love to try and find turtles, there is something so majestic about them and they are so graceful in the water.
What are your favourite memories of being an Awesome Whitsundays rep?
Hosting agent training trips in the Whitsundays, in particular taking agents up to the Whitehaven Beach Hill Inlet Lookout – after the 10 minute bush walk you come out to this spectacular view and my favourite memory is seeing their reactions of just pure amazement…Their jaws literally drop and then they break out in the biggest smile. This is what makes my job truly special, to be able to share that moment.
When can people snorkel when doing the Reefsleep?
Sleeping under the stars on the Great Barrier Reef is such a unique experience and the best part is you get the reef to yourself once the day guests leave. This then gives you time to snorkel ‘til about 5pm and then it’s time to get ready for dinner. In the morning you have another opportunity to jump back into the water after breakfast from 9am. You will be amazed how much more marine life you will see when you have the reef to yourself and a few other guests!
After an Awesome Whitsundays trip, what would you recommend visitors do in the Whitsundays?
If you can splurge I’d definitely recommend a scenic flight over the Reef and Whitehaven Beach
and to see the iconic Heart Reef. All Awesome Whitsunday Tours include the two “must see” icons; Whitehaven Beach and the Great Barrier Reef so I’d also recommend visiting Daydream Island and Hamilton Island. Otherwise just enjoying the relaxed vibe of Airlie Beach is the perfect way to unwind and enjoy the Whitsundays.
