Introducing Norweigan Songstress Frøkedal
We’re starting to think that there’s a factory in Scandinavia that has a conveyor belt of cool, alternative female singers that it just keeps churning out.
First there was Robyn with her clear-as-a-bell voice, wicked lyrics and trendy haircuts, and then came everyone’s favourite Scandy of the moment – Mø. Mø’s rise in popularity flourished this summer with her collaboration with Major Lazer.
Now, Norwegian singer Frøkedal has piqued our attention with new single First Friend, taken from her debut EP out today 4th September. Frøkedal is no newbie to the stage though havig fronted successful Norwegian outfits including Harrys Gym and Grammy-nominated I Was A King (who count Sufjan Stevens, Robyn Hitchcock and Norman Blake among past collaborators). However now Frøkedal is going solo. The EP is four tracks of folk-soaked pop and electronica, with latest single ‘First Friend’ serving a dark, nocturnal alternative to guitar-led predecessors ‘I See You’ and ‘Surfers’.
The EP has been co-produced by Ådne Meisfjord (formerly of Oslo-based krautrock and electronica outfit 120 Days), the track rounds out the ‘I See You’ EP with pulsating synths and rudimentary drums, over a tempo shifting four-and-a-half minutes.
