Jake Bugg Reinvents himself with “Gimme The Love”
After his 2013 album ‘Shangri La’, Jake Bugg seemingly disappeared off the face of the earth to go write his third album. Back with new single “Gimme the Love’, Bugg has introduced us to a completely new sound.
The 22 year olds first official single off his third studio album ‘On My One’ is like nothing we have ever seen before from the Nottingham raised prodigy. Unlike the melancholic acoustic tunes that propelled Bugg to national stardom, ‘Gimme the Love’ is quite the opposite. With a more upbeat tempo and intensified bassline, on top of Buggs new found hip-hop flow this song lands somewhere between Johhny Cash and Mike Skinner from The Streets.
His new sound could be an attempt to break into the mainstream or just Bugg allowing different influences into his music and experimenting with his sound. The song still has echos of everything we have grown to love about Jake. With tales of growing up on a Nottingham council estate such a core part of his music, its good to see Jake stick to his roots on the second verse of this track as he half sings – half raps; “False fibs talk about the old streets, Brick wall hit by the concrete”.
Since he burst onto the scene in 2012 it was clear to everyone that Jake Bugg had raw talent, four years on and that talent has matured before our eyes. Bugg clearly wants to give us an insight into his versatality with this new upbeat sound, hoping to show everyone he’s no one trick pony. This makes the release of ‘On My One’ all the more exciting as we are all anxiously waiting to see if he can pull off this reinvention of himself.
