James Zabiela – Born Electric
A talented DJ and producer, and these days, a label head, James Zabiela’s career has gone from strength to strength, slowly monopolizing all facets of his music career, one premeditated beat at a time. Launching in 2013, within a year, Zabiela’s label, Born Electric, has been nominated alongside the likes of Black Butter Records and Moda Black for ‘Best Label’ at the DJ Mag Best Of British awards, giving kudos to the infant record label.
Born Electric’s inception came at a time when Zabiela had been performing for a decade at ‘We Love’ parties, and felt it was time to try something new. In tandem with Mark Broadbent (who spent autumn and winter sending each other new music), the two came up with a new concept that allowed him to help curate four nights at the party, as well as inviting people whose music he admired. Zabiela hosted Born Electric nights four times during summer 2012, with guests including Modeselektor and Shackleton playing live and producers like Midland and Scuba joining Zabiela in Space. Proving a success, ‘Born Electric’ transformed itself into a musical entity to bring you excellent new music, with a promise for great tracks to be born from its creation.
In 2013, Zabiela took the label to Miami for WMC, Global Gathering in the UK, and held a residency at Space in Ibiza for the iconic ‘We Love’ parties. “I’m definitely more confident about my music and studio expertise,” says Zabiela, who took a certain step back from studio production to concentrate on touring for a couple of seasons. His latest single, ‘The Healing’, is proof that Zabiela is more musical than ever.
Deep, bold and bristling with emotional melodies, it’s probably not quite what you’d expect from the man who spends his summers in Space, but is true to his musical philosophy which takes into consideration everything from Modeselektor and Boards Of Canada, to classic Warp… and every other warp speed there is.
With just four releases under its belt, Born Electric has already solidified itself as a label to watch. Included in its releases is James Zabiela ‘The Healing’, Pedestrian ‘Hoyle Road’ and Iron Galaxy’s four track EP that travels through four beautiful nuances of Techno and House. Born Electric has also been responsible for the debut release of artist, Pedram’s ‘Nina’ and ‘Immaturity’, after he set the tone in November 2013 at Born Electric’s Boiler Room takeover.
A promising label for both established underground artists and a platform for up and coming talent, Born Electric will be travelling out to Australia for both Rainbow Serpent Festival and Chinese Laundry’s Garden Party on the long weekend of 25th January. Alongside James Zabiela, artists from the label who will be stepping up to the decks include Pedestrian, Drew Hill, and Fake Forward.
