Jess Glynne Interview

Follow us on Google News

Unless you’ve been living under Uluru, the name Jess Glynne should get a few bells ringing. With five consecutive UK number one singles, we speak to the woman with the most popular voice in music.

Hi Jess, where are you right now?
I’m currently on tour in the US.

So, to put it bluntly, you’re kind of everywhere at the moment! How does it feel to have become such a successful recording artist? What’s been a highlight of the journey?
I’ve experienced so many amazing moments but the main highlight so far would be releasing my debut album, ‘I Cry When I Laugh’. I poured a lot into creating this record and to be able to finally share it with everyone has been a real dream come true. You only get to release your debut album once so that moment will live with me forever.

You started off on Blackbutter Records, and went on to Atlantic, how important was this switch for you?
My publishing deal was signed via Black Butter and Atlantic has been my recording home from the beginning and I have found it to be a great partnership in getting my voice heard as an artist. The whole process has been organic and, collectively, they have really pushed me to be the best I can be.

You’ve worked with some amazing artists such as Clean Bandit, Tinie Tempah and Route 94, which has kind of stamped your vocals on this era of music. Do you have more collaborations coming up?
I’ve been really fortunate in the collaborations I’ve had so far as they have all created long-lasting memories. however, I don’t have any plans for the future just yet, as I’m focusing on bringing my band on the road and playing live to as many people as possible.

Having had to have vocal rest and surgery earlier this year, it seems like a realistic eventuality when you’re working so hard. How did this affect you?
When I was told that I had to have an operation, I was instantly heartbroken as my career was really starting to blossom and the thought of having to cancel shows and basically disappear for a while was a difficult reality. However, I was in the best possible hands with Dr. Zeitels from Boston, who has done similar ops for lots of people like Lionel Ritchie, Roger Daltrey, Adele and my friend Sam Smith who recommended him to me. I was with the best man in the world but there’s still no absolute guarantee that it would work. Thankfully, it has and I think my voice is the strongest it’s ever been.

Where’s the most incredible place touring has taken you to?
So far I’ve only been to America touring-wise and I can’t get enough of it! Next stop is Japan and I’m guessing that’s gonna be amazing!

If you could collaborate with anyone who would it be and why?
I have a long list but off the top of my head – Frank Ocean, Beyonce, Timbaland.

So when you’re not recording, writing or performing, what do you like to do to relax?
I absolutely love horse riding. Haven’t been able to do it for a while but hopefully I can do it again when I get a break. Maybe I’ll have my own horse one day.

Your mother worked in the music industry, and you also did a stint; would you consider also getting involved in the business side of the industry again, or is it just performing from here on out?
My dream has always been to be a singer but working for a management company really helped me to understand the inner workings of the business side. Plus my mother has given me invaluable advice and support, especially when my schedule gets a bit hectic, as she understands what it’s like “behind the scenes”.

Quick fire round – Let’s get to know Jess a little better!

Coffee or Tea? Tea

Night out in Camden or night out in Shoreditch? I’m gonna say Shoreditch!

Glass of wine or pint of beer? Water

Steak and chips or a cheeky Chinese? Just CHIPS! I don’t eat meat and I’m not a fan of Chinese.

Heels or trainers? That’s not fair, I love both!

All Saints or Topshop? Topshop

‘I Cry When I Laugh’ is out now.
