Within an hour of the Perth CBD is a dazzling array of beaches, bike paths, ocean, bush, parks and the river. Getting fit and keeping fit in Perth is not hard, but choosing what to do is the challenge.

For the extreme enthusiast there is kite surfing. The “Fremantle Doctor” (also known as the unique breeze created by the hot land temperature and cool climate of the ocean) provides the ultimate wind conditions for this sport. Skimming along the water, with the wind in your hair, while the sun sets is purely magical. For the water enthusiast, hours of kayaking in the Swan River soaking up the sun comes second to none. And for those of you who love running and cycling, you can take full advantage of almost 200kms of dedicated paths along the Swan and Canning rivers and along the coast, with few roads interrupting your path.

If you love combining swimming, running and cycling, triathlon clubs operate throughout the metro area. Each summer, Triathlon WA operates an extensive program of events to suit every level from amateur to competitor.

Of course, if you want to do something iconic, and be part of a volunteer community, then look no further than the local surf life saving clubs. Each club hosts weekly training and competitive events. These are suitable for complete beginners, and serious competitors. The training includes learning to run on sand, swimming in the ocean and surfboarding. A bronze medallion ocean swimming certificate is a prerequisite for being a beach patroller.

Perth has come of age and there is now a myriad of yoga schools to choose from. You can practice Bikram, Ashtanga and Hatha yoga in studios, as well as parks and on the beach. With so many schools to choose from, there is bound to be one to suit whatever type of yoga you wish to practice.

In spring, winter and autumn the most amazing place to be is on the Bibbulman Track. It is a 1000km, well maintained, walking trail from Perth to Albany. Shelters and water are provided for free approximately every 20kms along the trail. The wildlife and quiet beautiful bush settings are a uniquely WA experience.

Boasting pristine, clean, safe natural settings, Perth is the perfect place to stay fit and healthy.
