Lapalux – Moments Single Review
There’s no doubting that Lapalux’s particular brand of IDM beat-making is very much in vogue right now. Post-dubstep, future garage, glitch hop; across the UK, numerous producers are currently trading in chopped and skewed beats, warped yet soulful vocals, and synth sounds awash with retro charm. All of the above being present in droves on ‘Moments.’
Guest vocalist Py brings a delicate, haunting quality to the track’s intro, sounding utterly siren-like as she whispers “I keep moments of you trapped in film” against a serene background of glitch beats and patchwork xylophones. It’s a fairly slow-building exercise as more and more samples and rhythms gradually come to prominence, however somewhere down the line things start to feel a tad pandemonic.
As multiple sampled beats begin to cross over in polyrhythmic ways that most African drumming troupes wouldn’t have the gall to attempt, the heart of the track gets a little lost. For every soulful and wonderfully manipulated vocal line, there’s a misplaced 2-step beat or glaringly out-of-place synth blast. It all ends up detracting from its core; a beautiful vocal outing from Py that sits somewhere between modern urban isolation and recalling a former halcyon existence.
With some of the IDM weirdness reined in, there’s potential for some real beauty here; as it stands though, it looks like it’ll be 2-step forward for Lapalux, one step back.
