Little Bastard

Having released their debut album earlier this year, Australian seven-piece Little Bastard have burst onto the scene with their unique fusion of Punk and Bluegrass that incorporates guitars with fiddles, banjos and mandolins. Currently embarking on a nation wide tour of Australia, we caught up with Matty Took and spoke about everything from their wild live shows to future plans for the band.

Hi guys. How are you?
Yeah, pretty well.

Where in the world are you right now?
I just woke up in Kings Cross about to cook up some hectic breakfast.

How did Little Bastard form? How did you all meet?
Little bastard is a amalgamation of seven different dudes all joining different times, John met Eddy through school and Ross at a pub through mutual friends, then saw Liam and D’arcy at a folk festival playing as Nightowl, and Trev on stage at the Hollywood Hotel. I met these dudes through spontaneous jams and gigs.

What would you be doing if Little Bastard hadn’t formed?
I would probably be focusing a lot more on the other bands I’m in and writing a lot more tunes, but sitting around a lot rather than travelling to places in Australia that I haven’t even thought of existing.

Little Bastard is known for their wild antics and crazy live performances. What has been the most memorable live show you’ve had so far?
Most definitely the sold out show last Friday at the Newtown Social Club. Was the best vibes due to the sound of the venue, all of us living locally and with heaps of our mates getting down and causing a ruckus. It was also one of the first times I got to put down the banjo and play some electric guitar. Very fun.

As you’re a seven-piece group, is it difficult to share a stage with so many people? Do you always get along?
Sometimes it can get a bit etch to share the stages if they are really small or if the mixing board can only cater for half of us, but other than that we seem to get along pretty well, a little push and shove here and there but nothing hectic.

You released your debut album last month. How was that and is it a big accomplishment for Little Bastard?
Yes, it was such a great process especially working with Lachlan Mitchell. We had an album launch party at Young Henry’s Brewery in Enmore where we invited all of our friends, drank beers and had the album playing in the background; it was a lot of fun. We are all really proud with the way the album has turned out and to have a copy in physical form with vinyl as well.

The music video for ‘Be My Kind’ is fantastic. Tell us a bit about the storyline and how it was working with Rhys Day.
Cheers, I’m glad you dig it. The film is pretty much a random ensemble of different nostalgic scenes and shots. The video has no real storyline but conveys a thought of common feelings and emotions. Working with Rhys and all the other crew was very easy, as he knew was what going down and what had to come next for shooting.

The Little Bastard sound is incredibly unique and one of a kind. Musically and lyrically, who do you draw inspiration from?
We have many different songwriters in Little Bastard, which adds to the sound staying unique, but we listen to many a fair bit of Paul Kelly, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, The War on Drugs, Kurt Vile and Old Crow Medicine Show.

You’re about to embark on a national tour of Australia. What can old fans and new fans expect from a Little Bastard gig?
Heaps of brand new tracks that we haven’t toured with before and some drum kits and electrics.

Other than Australia, where would Little Bastard absolutely love to tour?
I reckon America would be great, they would dig our music and we would have a ball there, but I reckon Japan would be so much fun and get so loose.

What has been the craziest ‘on the road’ story you can share with us?
Probably when we went to New Caledonia for a couple of days. We met some people drinking on the beach around 3 in the morning who couldn’t talk any English at all and chilled there for a bit; and while we were there, Liam got spat on by some chick because he called himself the president of New Caledonia. I’m positive that there will be something during our travels this tour to top it off.

Check out Little Bastard on their national tour at one of the following upcoming dates:

Thursday June 19 – Prince Of Wales, Bunbury WA
