Live Review: Debian Blak – Corsica Studios, London Tuesday 30th October 2012
Fresh out of the Leeds music scene and stepping onto the stage of the London Corsica Studios- the reception was simply electric for this electronic producer. Emerging through the industry with a very unique and technically immaculate second EP Hawks and Spies, Debian Blak has obviously discovered his forward thinking sound and looked very safe and confident on stage performing infront of a very alive and sold out crowd which were also buzzing for the performance of Mt. Wolf.
After a tour of Australia at the beginning of the year, Debian Blak is now ready to take on his homelands and prove that his distinctively haunting and vulnerable sounding instrumentals and tones are the ones to listen out for from now on. His opening track ‘What we did’ is an earlier track of DB’s with catchy synth sounds and reminiscent beats holding a standard for the rest of the show, which was exceeded throughout.
The crowd seemed to seriously melt into the set with the vocals of Anna Stott in ‘Take Me On’ and ‘Tantalise’ as Debian Blak seriously showed what this band is about. The live performances of the rest of the band showed the true extent to the talent and also showed a natural aptitude and capacity as these tracks had to be so technically precise as each instrument plays through. As DB proudly introduced his last track of his set on Tuesday evening, the clichéd feeling of wanting more was obvious throughout the beat-hungry crowd. Hawks and Spies was a definite highlight of the evening, the mixed bag of audience tuned in acutely to the exhibiton of drums, keys, synths, vocals and electronica samples that stapled the air of Corsica studios leaving tingle as the set came to the close. Having previously heard the tracks from my heaphones that day- DB is an act, which is to be seen live to appreciate due to its intense quality and exclusive live sound.
The tracks seem to have enough structure and rhythmical sense to be heard in a club with the prowess of the sounds you would want to listen to on your commute to work- even being a non-Dubstep head myself, this looks to be the start of the post- Dubstep era thanks to Blak himself.
