Luisa Omielan Sydney Comedy Festival 2015 Interview
Luisa Omielan has been making a name for herself in Australia. Having already toured Melbourne and Adelaide, she’s going to be at Sydney Comedy Festival from 22nd – 26th April with her critically-acclaimed show, ‘What Would Beyoncé Do?!’. Her first time Down Under, we had a chat with the fresh and sassy comedienne to find out how it was all going.
Hi Luisa, how are you?
Really well, thank you. It’s my first time in Australia and I am loving it! Can totally see why people move here!
You’ve been performing ‘What Would Beyoncé Do?!’ to crowds Down Under; how is it going so far?
It’s been so full-on and such a rollercoaster! I have loved it; audiences have been amazing, a little tame to start with but they’re really starting to party!
It’s been very successful in the UK, and you’ve been praised for being gutsy, fearless and, most importantly, incredibly funny; what was your inspiration for the show and how much does it have to do with the American singer?
You don’t need to know much about Beyoncé to enjoy the show, but it’s extra layered if you do! I was just really depressed and heartbroken and talking about it on stage took the sting out of it – the Beyoncé backdrop was a nice juxtaposition to the material.
Were you looking forward to finally bringing the show to Australia?
I won’t lie, I had never wanted to go to Australia because everyone I have ever met has only ever said it was amazing, so out of pure stubbornness, I was like “Nah, can’t be that good!” So wrong – it is as wonderful as everyone says it is!
After three years with the show, has it evolved at all over time?
It’s pretty much the same story – people come for the story so it’s not changed that much. I’ve just hopefully got better at doing it!
Luisa Omielan On The Thigh Gap
Spending so much time in Australia, what have you been getting up to in your spare time?
Eating fried vegetables. Aubergines, zucchini – the works!
With Sydney Comedy Festival left in your Australian tour, is there anything you’d like to do in the city?
I really wanted to go see the sites but the rainstorms at the moment are just reminding me of London.
Will you be bringing your follow-up show, ‘Am I Right Ladies?!’ to Australia?
I really hope so! I would love to come out with the follow-up, I think you guys will love it!
Do you enjoy the travelling that touring offers?
Absolutely, I get to travel the world and am being so well looked after. I have never done the whole travelling thing, so I love that my career provides that gap!
What do you miss the most about the UK?
A good decent cup of tea and black cabs, taxis that know where they are going.
What can you not live without while on tour?
My phone connection to my Mumma and friends.
What’s your ideal holiday destination?
Thailand, and I go next week! So excited to crash and burn but I know after two days I will be twiddling my thumbs and wanting to get back on the horse!
