Marlon Hoffstadt Interview

Marlon Hoffstadt Interview. Based in Berlin, 20 year old DJ and producer Marlon Hoffstadt  is making quite the name for himself in the music industry. Already being dubbed as a future star by BBC Radio 1, we talk to Marlon about what 2014 has in store for him.

Hi Marlon. How are you?
I’m fine, thank you.

Where in the world are you right now?
Right now I am in the Studio in Berlin, working on new tracks and remixes.
What is the music scene in Berlin like? How did growing up there influence your music?
The scene here is very much influenced by Electronic music. We’ve got everything from Dubstep to House, while House music plays the main part obviously. If I did not grow up in Berlin I wouldn´t have gone to clubs that early in my life and also most likely would not have become a DJ and producer.
I don´t go clubbing that often in Berlin as I am on the road a lot, but the fascinating thing about Berlin is the possibilities. You can party every day.

You started your career at the young age of 17 while studying for your A Levels. How did you balance the two?
My A-Levels suffered a little. But in the end I have to say I managed it quite well. Going to the library in the morning and studying for my exams and then working on my new EP from my little home-studio. My head was in the music, though.

What was it that made you want to get into music from such a young age?
That´s hard to say. Music is quite important to me. I always listen to music, at home, on the road and in the studio. Music to me can say a lot of different things and I just love listening to it. And if you engage in something that much, you try to become a part of it.

Tell us a bit about your debut EP ‘You And A Lovestoned Ghost’. Where did you record it and what was the recording process like?
I did my first EP with singer Amy Lyon. My tracks always have a lot of vocals and are quite poppy. It started of by me remixing her song “Do You”. After that we worked on originals. She always sent me her vocals via Soundcloud, as she lives in England. We actually never met personally. It ended up working pretty well though.

Describe the ‘You And A Lovestoned Ghost’ sound in three words for those who haven’t heard it.
Simple, Dreamy, Poppy

You’ve already collaborated with David Keno, HRRSN and Cleov. Who would you love to collaborate with in the future?
There a quite a lot of people I´d like to work with: Mayer Hawthorne, Bo Saris, and Charles Bradley.
All in all I like collaborating the most. Like with HRRSN. We made a few EP´s and remixes together and also made an album together. That took a year, but it was worth the wait. I can´t say too much about it except that it will come out under a completely new project, consisting of HRRSN and me.

You’ve DJ’d across the world. What is your favourite country to play and why?
There are so many beautiful countries in which I had a lot of fun, so it is hard to single one out.

‘Shake That’ has had huge success. What does it feel like to have such huge support behind your music?
It feels good getting support by so many people. But I also hope that I won´t be reduced to that song in the future and that people will also like my future productions.

Legendary DJ Pete Tong dubbed you a ‘future star’. What was that like?
Of course it is a great honor to be selected by Pete Tong. I also hope that I can live up to it.

Tell us a bit about the ‘Shake That’ T-shirt range. How did you come up with the idea?
I am into these Tiger and Leopard patterns. So I had the idea to make a T-Shirt and so HRRSN just made a quick sketch which became the final design. It is very limited and I think I´ll be making them from time to time in the future.

Where are the best places to go in Berlin?
I´d say Panorama Bar, Watergate, Kween Kotti und Bohnengold.

Where can your fans catch you this summer?
I´ll be everywhere in Europe and a lot in the UK. If I am lucky I’ll do an Australian and South-American tour again later this year.
