Melbourne’s Airwolf talks groovy, soul pleasing music, clubs and India

Follow us on Google News

What’s your name and what do you?
My name is Justin and I make music under the alias Airwolf.
What kind of music do you play? What best describes your sound?
House music. Groovy bass lines / energetic / soul pleasing.
What would you say is your biggest influence?
Every and any genre and era of music. From 50s rock and roll all the way through house to 70s disco to hip-hop. And Seinfeld.
Where’s the best club you’ve ever played?
Way too hard to just pick one over the years. Not one stands out to me but these are my favourites of each state that I can think of:
Melbourne – Prince Saturdays
Sydney – Chinese Laundry
Gold Coast – Elsewhere
Adelaide – Electric Circus
And the best festival?
Falls Festival 2012. The biggest crowd I’ve ever played to – maybe like 10,000 or something. The scariest and most fun I’ve ever had.
Where’s the most unique festival you’ve been to and what was so special?
Going to Splendour In the Grass when I was like 19 years old was such a BIG impact on me. Just so many people having the best fun and spreading good vibes!

What was the most difficult festival you ever went to and was it worth it?
Strawberry Fields – A local bush doof somewhere in the bush in Australia. Spiders… SPIDERS EVERYWHERE!
Where’s your hometown?
Melbourne, Australia. Westmeadows to be exact – REPPIN THE 3049!
What’s your favourite local bar/restaurant/bar/club?
Laksa King, Roti Road, Pint Of Milk, Reverence Hotel, Curry Cafe Canteen, Sister Of Soul – I pretty much just mentioned my favourite places to eat at haha, sorry.

Where’s your favourite clubbing destination?
My favourite places are the ones you don’t expect that would be good. I feel like when you go somewhere that’ expected to be good, it’s not the same as going out to somewhere where you expect it to be shit. So to answer your question the surprising places are my favourite.
Is there something you can’t travel without?
My laptop and noise cancelling headphones. Nobody likes a screaming baby on a flight. Oh, and snacks!
What travel destination would you recommend our readers add to their bucket list?
INDIA!!! Hands down. Huge eye opener and the local people are so lovely. I love everything about India.
Where was the most surprising place you discovered a big musical influence?
Festivals are great for this – Just wandering around hearing different artists. One of my favourites that I am still a big fan of is Metronomy.
Where can we see you play over the next few months?
The rest of this year will be spent mostly working on new music to release! Plus a tour to be announced soon.
Anything else you would like to add?
Check out the video for my new single ‘Chasing You’!

About ‘Chasing You’:
The beat for ‘Chasing You’ was written while my friends and I were hanging out playing FIFA and because I kept losing I had some spare time, so I pulled out the laptop and made what is now known as ‘Chasing You’. Fun fact – previously the track was known as ‘Convertible’; I felt the song sounded like a couple cool cats driving with the top down. After a while of sitting on the beat, I knew it needed a really strong, epic voice to accompany the vibe and I got a couple demos in from singer/songwriters. I got sent a demo that blew me away from an Australian singer named Bonnie Anderson – her voice is incredible. I knew it was the perfect fit – her voice is so strong and powerful! I was so stoked I had a celebratory boogie in the studio.
