More Immigration for Shell
Mr Andrew Smith, the chairman of Shell Australia, has called for much bigger levels of immigration so that there can be more growth in the country’s population. Mr Smith believes that the industry was not successful in advocating for immigration policies which will greatly help in the rise of the economy.
”Often-hysterical debate has surrounded Australian immigration in the new millennium,” stated Mr Smith during a lunch at the Melbourne Mining Club. ”(There has been a) failure of industry to advocate for an immigration program that will provide economic stimulus to a sluggish economy.”
Mr Smith, however, stressed that this was not his way of calling for more or fewer workers through the 457 visas, but more on the growth in the population across the regions.
”Industry leaders need to both advocate for a balanced mix of skilled and humanitarian migration,” he continued on to say. ”Then back up our advocacy with meaningful decisions that contribute to legacy.”
The Shell chairman also sad that economic diversity is the only way that population growth can be achieved, so that Australia’s north can reach its full potential.
The immigration legacy of gold rush towns in the country such as Bendigo, according to Mr Smith, is a big challenge to take upon in order for the same potential could be realised just like what happened to the towns of Gladstone and Broome.
