Music Video Of The Week – Solace By Fyfe
A music video can be the difference between a make or break track, and one video in particular has caught our attention this week, and that’s Fyfe’s Solace.
The musician has recently been collaborating with artist Sophie Derrick who has been utilising her signature style to create his single and album artwork, and has also integrated her unique style of painting to his latest music video for ‘Solace’.
The video shows Fyfe covered in paint, and cleverly also shows reversed shots of the paint coming off his face, as well as snippets of Derrick painting on a backdrop, integrating the musician to the backdrop.
We haven’t seen such creativity with the blend of art and music since Gotye and Kimbra’s ‘Somebody That I used To know’. But what stands out in Fyfe and Derrick’s collaboration is actually seeing the process of how she makes her artwork and transposing this to a live show of her process.
Paul Dixon, A.K.A Fyfe says of the collaboration,
“The actual physical process of wearing the paint is slightly odd at first but after a while it is weirdly enjoyable, although taking it off is not so fun.
“As an artist I base a lot of what I do around mystery and ambiguity – wearing the paint to me was almost like wearing a mask, but the amazing thing about the way Sophie paints is that it still points to the subject, i.e. in a lot of ways I still look like me. I found that appealing because it is then a conversation about ‘who could I be’, rather than, ‘who shall I pretend to be’. In some ways I’m being masked but equally in some ways different traits are begin revealed.”
