NBN Speed Upgrade 2025: What Australians Need to Know Before the Rollout
Australian households are just weeks away from the NBN speed upgrade 2025, promising internet speeds up to five times faster. However, you may miss out on this game-changing improvement if you don’t have the right connection type, plan, or modem.
What is the NBN speed upgrade 2025?
Earlier this year, NBN Co announced a nationwide upgrade to download and upload speeds, rolling out in mid-September 2025. This upgrade aims to boost Australia’s broadband performance, addressing its low global ranking, 75th in Speedtest’s June broadband speed index, trailing behind countries such as Egypt, Slovakia, and Argentina.
With the proper setup, households could see download speeds increase up to 500%.
Who is eligible for the upgrade?
The NBN speed upgrade 2025 will only apply to homes with:
-
Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) connections
-
Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) connections
Households using fixed wireless, satellite, Fibre to the Node (FTTN), or Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) connections will not receive the upgrade. You can check your connection type online through your provider or NBN Co’s website.
Additionally, you’ll need to be on an NBN plan of at least 100Mbps (Home Fast) to benefit. Most Australians are currently on 50Mbps plans so that an upgrade may be required.
What speeds will change?
-
Home Fast: 100Mbps → 500Mbps download
-
Home Superfast: 250Mbps → 750Mbps download
-
Home Ultrafast: 50Mbps → 100Mbps upload (download speeds also increasing)
-
New Home Hyperfast plan: up to 2000Mbps download
No extra cost for most eligible customers
Major providers, including Telstra, Optus, Vodafone, TPG, and iiNet, have confirmed that the NBN speed upgrade 2025 will come at no additional cost for eligible plans and will be automatic in many cases.
However, there’s a catch: your home equipment must be ready. Outdated routers, poor cabling, or incompatible Wi-Fi setups may prevent you from enjoying the full benefit of the speed boost.
Why upgrading your gear matters
NBN Co revealed that 62% of Australians haven’t updated their home internet setup in over two years, and two-thirds haven’t changed their broadband plan in five years. An older modem or a poor Wi-Fi extender could limit your speed even if your plan qualifies.
Telstra, Optus, and TPG are urging customers to:
-
Check their connection type online
-
Upgrade to eligible NBN plans (100Mbps or higher)
-
Confirm their modem and Wi-Fi can handle gigabit speeds
Telstra said, “We’ll be passing on NBN Co’s new internet speed upgrades to customers at no extra cost, but it’s a good idea to check if you have the right NBN hardware before speeds accelerate.”
What should you do now?
-
Check your address on your provider’s website or NBN Co’s website.
-
Upgrade to at least 100Mbps if you’re still on 50Mbps.
-
Assess your modem/router to ensure it supports faster speeds.
-
Prepare for automatic plan upgrades—but verify your eligibility.
The NBN speed upgrade 2025 marks a significant step forward for Australian broadband. With more devices than ever in the average home, jumping from just two or three in 2015 to around 25 today, faster and more reliable internet is no longer a luxury; it’s a necessity.
