New law to Stop Allowing Offenders From Becoming Family Visa Sponsors
New law to Stop Allowing Offenders From Becoming Family Visa Sponsors In keeping up with cracking down on grave offenders on family violence, a new law is going to be introduced in the Australian parliament which is going to ultimately keep these individuals from sponsoring a spouse to apply and be granted an Australian visa. This, according to a report by the Herald Sun.
This new piece of legislation was introduced in parliament earlier in March of this year however, it lapsed when the parliament went on for the federal election.
Under the new legislation that is being proposed, sponsors are going to face scrutiny before visas are granted, and those who do not provide proper assistance to the new arrivals will be given an equal kind of punishment.
The sponsors need to promise that they will support the people they will be sponsoring for 2 years however, if they ever decide to renege, there will be no consequences for that.
The objective of the new legislation is to fix these issues by demanding that sponsors be assessed and inposing penalties should they breach any of their responsibilities.
This is also going to allow the Department of Immigration and Border Protection to reject a request to sponsor a partner in case it shows or it has been proven that an applicant has a history of grave criminal conduct in a relationship, or there have been any convictions in sex offences in the past.
The new law is mainly directed to protecting visa holders, such as women and children, from experiencing any kind of family violence.
”This is a very significant first step in protecting potentially vulnerable visa applicants from the risk of domestic violence,” Mr Peter Dutton, the minister for the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.
”The measures being introduced in this Bill build on the work being done across all areas of government to reduce the incidence of domestic violence in our community and support the National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children,” Mr Dutton also said.
