We catch up with Nick Cody to find out some more about his upcoming Australian tour, ‘Come Get Some’, and why 2015 has been a good year for the young comedian.

Travel to Western Australia

Hi Nick, how are you doing?

I’m not bad, thank you very much for interviewing me, I appreciate it.

It’s a pleasure. So you’re in London at the moment then, how are you enjoying the capital?

That’s right I’ve been performing my ‘Beard Game Strong’ tour at the London Soho theatre. I’m loving London! It’s actually my first time here, I’ve been out and seen a whole bunch of people, went to see a proper football game which was good, but I’m thinking of going to a division 2 game or something where it gets proper interesting and a bit raucous.

Glad you’re liking the city! Have you had the chance to explore Soho?

Yeah, because I’m actually staying quite close to the theatre so every day I’ve been just kind of walking around, seeing all the different spots but I’ve been spending quite a lot of time in Soho. You’ve got some great restaurants and cool bars around that area. I’ve even found a place that does Guniess from St James Gate – straight from the source, it’s beautiful!

So you’ve been travelling all over the place, I read that the only place you haven’t hit yet is Antarctica!

In the last year It was like Edinburgh for a month, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, America Dubai, Afghanistan, Bairain, it’s a great lifestyle!

So on your travels have you been inspired for any material for your upcoming tour? How do you typically tend to find new material?

For me it tends to be a lot of little anecdotes and small stories about my life, so to be honest I just intend to do everything I can, I don’t leave the house with the intention of writing something.  Sometimes I come across things which are amazing, sometimes things aren’t so cool, sometimes things are pretty scary – you never know, I just go out and try and do as much as possible, it’s a pretty sweet life!

Do you get to explore these amazing locations?

Yeah well at the Edinburgh fringe last year I had a week before I went to the US to start doing shows there, I went up to the Scottish highlands which was pretty cool, shot over to Ireland – Dublin and Kilkenny which was fantastic. Yeah if I’m around during the day I always go and check stuff out because before I got into comedy, I’d have to save up for a whole year to get somewhere and now if I get to do it with work it’s the best of both worlds!

How do your audiences compare worldwide?

To be completely honest I find the night of the week will dictate the energy in the room more than where you are, like a Tuesday night or a Sunday night they’re going to be a bit quieter than a Friday or Saturday in places like Melbourne and New York, when people are pumped up.

So you’re back to Oz soon to start your ‘Come Get Some’ tour, how are you planning on transitioning between the content from your previous tour?

I’ve been working on that new tour sort of for the past 5 months, and then I got the call from Soho to come and perform in London so it’s been on hold for a bit, but it will be good! It was good to come in and do stuff that I know is tight and works a treat. Now I’ll have to go home and forget the stuff I’ve been doing this week and remember the stuff the same next week!

Are you looking forward to playing a home crowd in Melbourne?

Well I’m only there for two days before I’m off to Adelaide and Brisbane. Melbourne comedy festival is just my favourite time of the year though, I have friends from all over the world coming and I’m at home so I’m very excited for sure.

How do you psych yourself up to go on stage before a gig; what’s your pre-show ritual?

In the early days of the tour I’ll have a look over the notes, I’ll listen to a recording the night before and see if I’m add lobbing anything and possibly add anything in. But now, at the point with ‘Beard Game Strong’, I don’t think about it until I’m at the theatre and then all my pre-show music is always just over the top rap, like rick ross and all that ridiculous bass or whatever and that just pumps me up and I think just ‘holy shit’ here we go.

Do you interact with the audience much?

There is a tiny bit of my show where we re-record a part of an audio book for an Australian soldier by the name of Mark Donaldson who won the Victoria Cross and I get the crowd to help me record it, making gun noises and what not which is really good fun.

And so you’ve also done quite a bit of TV in the last year, have you got any more television appearances or plans in the pipeline?

I have some more stand-up spots at home. Acting stuff I just tend to take it when it comes up. My favourite thing is stand-up, I could do it all day long, every day I just love it! I don’t necessarily chase acting stuff but when it comes along I enjoy doing it, but stand-up is where the heart is.

Lastly, what do you have planned for 2016?

So I’m off to NZ, then back to Oz and then back to the UK at the start of July and then possible Montreal and Edinburgh again, then I’m back in the US, could  be doing some more stuff in Europe, haven’t book that far ahead but up to August it’s pretty booked in – more travel, it’s how I like it!

Thanks Nick and good luck!
