Nicky Night Time Interview
Nicky Night Time is one of Australia’s favourite sons. He’s been a leader in Oz’s electronic music scene for while now and he continues to go from strength to strength. We caught up with him soon after a heavy birthday weekend in Miami.
It’s been a while, how are you doing?
Hi again, yeah it has been! I’m great, thanks. I’ve been really busy making house records, mixing and producing indie records and cutting some album stuff as well. So yeah, lots going on, but all of it awesome which makes it easier to cop with!
How excited are you for your big tour of OZ this summer? Are there any gigs in particular you’re looking forward to DJ’ing?
Really excited! I love being able to DJ and get out of the studio, even though I enjoy the production side I love testing out new records on the crowds here and finding out which mixes work, the kinds of sounds people are into. And I always love me a bit of TBC action in Brissy and am looking forward to Aukland. It should be a good summer!
We have seen you’ve been in LA cooking up some music, what can you tell us about that experience? What’s the club scene like in LA at the moment?
I was working outta Westlake for a week and then working out of my studio in West Hollywood for some more Jess Kent records, and also some stuff for Wolf & Rostein’s roster. I also cut some stuff for Black Butter and an album which I’m pretty excited about. The club scene in LA is pretty rocking at the moment: a lot of warehouse parties and club nights happening every week and the weather is always amazing, which makes it easy to always wanna be out and about.
We also saw you in Miami celebrating your birthday, how was that?
Wowzers, that was fun! I played the Sweat party with Cut Snake, Jessie Rose and Sinden and of course the rest of the lads but then hit Diddy’s party which was all house music! Epic. Too much Ciroc but a great party!
Could you recommend a couple hot spots? Off topic, but where’s the best place to eat?
Ghost Boy cantina in China Town or Spice Alley near Central Park. Or if you really want to push to boat out try Automata.
You’ve been fiercely loyal to the Australian scene, what do you think are the best components of the scene? And what’s kept you there?
Well to be honest I feel that with all these stupid lockout laws its actually getting harder to have a scene here, but there are a lot of talented people down here and there are always people wanting to work! Food isn’t too bad down here either, which definitely helps.
Being an international DJ you obviously get to travel to new places? Do you think this inspires your music?
Most definitely! I’m a sucker for fresh situations and new people so I guess that experience of breaking through first-time barriers is always what inspires me the most! Also seeing the different way that people come at the creative song writing really inspires me, to see other people take a completely different approach but come out with something amazing.
You must get to meet a lot of interesting people and see some great trends and movements developing. Is there anything in particular that’s exciting you at the moment?
Yeah I think the return to actual music and interesting chords and textures is making a comeback. A lot of rappers are moving away from the cold textures into more almost psychedelic textures and a less programmed, more organic feel. I think the direction it’s all heading in is pretty dope.
Is there one travel gadget, app, fashion, home comfort or bit of tech you can’t travel without?
I guess my Maschine, and my black Nike tracksuit of course!
What can we expect from you in 2016?
A lot more music!
