Ninety-Mile Beach of New Zealand is the fabled strip of sand that stretches from Ahipara to Scott Point, 5 km south of Cape Maria van Diemen.  It is a never-ending paradise of spectacular sunsets and the best left-hand surf breaks in the world.  Despite its name, the long narrow ribbon of the beach is actually 88 km (55 miles) long.  The 90-mile beach offers great fishing and clamming spots, sand-boarding etc. along the way. 1. Fishing

Enjoy the best and most diverse fishing at the 90-mile Beach!  Enjoy your own piece of beach at the secluded McGaurans Beach and Pettmans Beach.  Your day’s catch can include tailor, salmon, snapper, whiting, gummy shark, elephant shark, yellowtail kingfish and flathead.  Large snapper and big shark can be found just a short distance from the shore.   Stay over at the villages of Woodside Beach, Seaspray and Lake Tyers along the 90-mile Beach.

2. Visiting Cape Reinga

Stand in awe at the dramatic point where the powerful currents of the Pacific Ocean and Tasman sea swirl together!  Visit Cape Reinga, situated at one end of the 90-mile Beach.   Cape Reinga also holds Maori cultural importance, as the Maori people believe that the souls of the departed leave New Zealand from here.

3. Sand-boarding

Grab some sunscreen & plenty of drinking water and head out to the sand dunes of the 90-mile Beach early in the morning.  Practice the unique and thrilling sport of sand-boarding over the towering hills of sand at the beach.  Have loads of fun!  Gain confidence and speed with each run over the massive sand dunes just inland from the beach!    

4. Digging for New Zealand “Tuatua” Clams

Wade into the ocean and collect the delicious Tuatua clams during the low tide.  Digging for Tuatua clams (a native shellfish) in the sand is a special treat indeed.  Wiggle your toes in the soft muddy sand to spot them in their burrows and collect them.  Cook them in countless delicious ways and indulge in the tasty morsels while you are here!

• New Zealand Clams Restriction

The law allows only 150 Tuatua clams to be collected per person for a day.  Going over the limit can subject you to a hefty fine.
