Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All – Artist Profile
California rap collective, Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (OFWGKTA) shot to fame following the release of controversial front man, Tyler, The Creator’s solo album, ‘Goblin’ in May 2011. The 10 man crew who, before ‘Goblin,’ had no physical releases despite recordings dating back to 2008, have since gained themselves a cult following. Odd Future have been labelled under a range of genres, from “horrorcore” to “indie rap,” and have disputed each categorisation as they come, leaving them all but un-definable. In ‘Sandwitches,’ they protest, “And we don’t make fucking horrorcore, you fucking idiots…” A fine example of the kind of controversial lyrics, that have been primarily responsible for their rise to fame.
Their worldwide notoriety was further confirmed in November 2011, when their four-date UK tour sold out in a matter of hours, despite the group being dropped from New Zealand’s Big Day Out Festival due to homophobic lyrics and drawing in crowds of protesters at Pitchfork Festival in Chicago, who spoke out against Odd Future’s promotion of homophobia and misogyny.
Multiple groups have developed within odd Future, including The Internet (Syd Tha Kyd and Matt Martians) who will release the first physical album from Odd Future Records, a label founded with the help of Sony’s RED Distribution, which will release music only by members of OFWGKTA.
In September 2011, Odd Future Records digitally released ‘12 Odd Future Songs,’ as well as announcing their own sketch comedy show, ‘Loiter Squad,’ which is scheduled to premiere in 2012.
Odd Future will be playing at Big Day Out, Sydney Enmore Theatre 24th January, and Melbourne 1st February
