One To Watch – Courtney Barnett

Follow us on Google News

Melbourne’s Courtney Barnett plays a stripped-back version of indie-folk with a few lo-fi elements chucked into the mix.

The simplicity of the music coupled with the vocals – which are almost spoken-word – creates a really cool, Dylan-esque sound. ‘History Eraser’ and ‘Avant Gardener’ are perfect examples of her lyrical style, storytelling but also poking fun at herself. ‘Anonymous Club’, on the other hand, is more geared towards the folkier side. It’s one of the few tracks where Barnett reverts to a more obvious singing style, but it works really well.

Despite only having a few EP releases, and an EP collection, to date, she has established herself as an artist with a style which is different from her contemporaries. This is no mean feat. Her work is available to check out via her website at courtneybarnett.com.au.
