One To Watch – Hookworms
Hookworms are awesome. They are a psychedelic rock band who also draw on the meandering nature of shoegaze. It’s more than that though.
While most of the songs are of a standard psych/garage rock mould, the vocals are often stretched to breaking point, packed with reverb and melted into the fuzz of the guitar. Their new record, ‘The Hum’, is also solid. ‘The Impasse’ opens the record in spectacular style, blasting off into a haze of pure garage rock. ‘Radio Tokyo’, of a similar style, is the standout track on what is easily one of the most exciting records of the year.
‘The Hum’ swerves between chilled out psychedelic rock, shoegaze and garage rock seamlessly, merging the three at points without ever seeming disjointed.
