One To Watch – Pohl
Bristol band, Pohl, sound like a Melvins/Tool lovechild with some R era Queens of the Stone Age thrown in for good measure. They are not stingy when it comes to distortion – even the drums are fuzzed to breaking point. This is by no means a bad thing, quite the opposite.
Pohl’s blend of sludgy bass, otherworldly guitar and paint-stripping vocals is able to be aggressive and melodic simultaneously. It is the kind of music that is best experienced live, in a small venue filled to capacity. Pohl have two EPs to date, ‘Pohlsmoker’ and ‘Pohl II’.
‘Pohl II’ somehow has a much more refined sound despite losing none of the rawness of the first EP. The riff to ‘Cute Guy Alert’ is simplistic brilliance and ‘God Save The Queen (High on Death)’ is one of the rawest ballads you are likely to hear.
