Opossom Come To Melbourne
Kody Nielson emerges from New Zealand scuzz-pop tearaways The Mint Chicks with a brand new project under the moniker, Opossom and the track “Getaway Tonight”.
From unannounced beginnings in late 2011 on a bandcamp page, Opossom recently featured on Pitchfork as “pysch-pop noisemakers” whose “playful, tunnel-vision guitars should remind you of Tame Impala”.
All self-recorded and produced by Kody, this first bite of Opossom’s debut album is a taste of what is to come – insistent beats, a hint of garagey organ and guitars and unashamedly escapist lyrics come together in perfect form.
Opossom are also announcing their live Australian debut in May. Joined in the band by chanteuse turned multi-instrumentalist Bic Runga and Mint Chicks bassist Michael Logie, Kody played Auckland’s leg of the St Jerome’s Laneway festival in January to great reviews and the trio will play London shows just ahead of their Australian dates.
Opossom’s ‘Getaway Tonight’ is taken from the debut album “Electric Hawaii” out Friday, June 1. ‘Getaway Tonight’ will be released digitally on Tuesday, April 10. “Electric Hawaii” is available for pre-order from May 1st.
