Outback Adventure Crossing The Nullarbor Plain

Follow us on Google News

Travelling from Adelaide to Perth? Why not try a journey more unique and challenging by crossing the vast Nullarbor Plain…

Although few may consider the road trip both treacherous and risky given a history of failed crossings, the pure scale of the scenery of Nullarbor Plain is truly worth the gamble.

Hire your own car or campervan and immerse yourself in the brilliant outback and breathe in the dusty aroma of drenched desert. With wide open spaces, it is so bare and vast, but is guaranteed to be an experience you will never forget.

Nullarbor Plain is an almost treeless area located on the Great Australian Bight coast with the Great Victoria Desert to its north. The sparse vegetation in this mesmerising area consists of low saltbush and blue bush scrub.

Travelling to Perth through the Nullarbor Plain will take an extra few days, however it is an amazing way to see Australia’s own genuine outback.

There is a lot more to the Nullarbor Plain than just desert and shrubs. Other highlights of this trip include seeing the brilliant plateaus that are studded with the bluebush. Driving through the vast desert you may even come across mobs of Kangaroos and hear the giant wedge-tailed eagles as they fly above and patrol the blue skies.

On your drive to Perth, you could even take a few mini detours to some captivating places nearby, such as Burra. This country town is located 160km from Adelaide, with an extremely small population. It is popular with tourists due to its history and mining heritage, and would be an ideal first place to stop and see an authentic Australian town.

Additionally, you could make a brief stop to Port Augusta, located on the main route just 300km from Adelaide. Here you could take in the sweeping views of the East by heading up to Port Augusta’s Water Tower Lookout. Just don’t forget your camera!

If you have even more time, then make sure you have a brief visit Ceduna. For those travelling the Nullarbor and extreme nature tripping, it is one of the best places to stop and rest during your drive. Cenduna is a small hub town, located on the scenic shores of Murat Bay and is a cultural, relaxing place to stop off at.

Australians believe the Nullarbor Plain to be an old dried up sea bed, but if you scratch the dry surface then you will unearth a rich history that makes this place worth the time to see!

Many meteorites have been discovered here, and is one of the reasons why this place feels so mysterious and impressive. You might even be lucky enough to see one of these yourself, since they are very well preserved in the arid climate…

Due to the lengthy roads, on your way to Perth you will have to stop over for the night. There is accommodation available along the way, however, to get the full outback experience we recommend sleeping under the sky with the many opportunities for free camping.
Stop off for the night and stay in your comfy campervan to allow your sense of wonder to be truly ignited when you see the luminous starry skies in the evening. Camping under awesome desert stars is something that even some of the most intrepid of travellers have never done.

It is this reason that so many people believe driving the Nullarbor Plain is the most epic road trek they have ever done, and it is one of the most unique ways to see the outback with their very own eyes.
The rewarding drive can also bring you closer to raw nature, as it showcases some of the natural beauty of the Australian outback but also the lesser known highlight of the road trip – the diverse wildlife.

It is likely that you will spot wombats, kangaroos, emus, and even One Humped Camels in their natural habitat as they travel around in their many herds. Dingos are also a wildlife resident of the Nullarbor, and you can often see these scavenging for food.

Spotting some of these amazing creatures on your long drive may well be the highlight of your authentic outback journey!

The Nullarbor Plains road trip is a trek not to be overlooked. Take on this incredible opportunity and challenge to drive yourself through the treacherous outback – imagine the crazy outback stories you can tell to your friends after you return!
