A legend in the world of music, Paul van Dyk will be headlining the Atlantis Australia tour, alongside fellow artists, MaRLo, Mark Sixma, Roxanne Emery and Driftmoon. Despite a predictably busy schedule, we got some time with the dance music aficionado to discuss heading Down Under, ‘The Politics of Dancing’, and his beloved Berlin.

Hi Paul, how’s life treating you?
Good, thanks. I recently departed Planet Berlin for six weeks on the road!

Awesome! You’ll soon be heading down to Australia for the Atlantis tour; what can ticket-holders expect from the night?
Possibly more new Paul van Dyk music than you’ll be able to wrap your head around in just one night!

Is your current set inspired by the material on ‘The Politics of Dancing 3’?
Almost entirely. When you’re in the studio making an album, that’s obviously your exclusive focus. Then you always have a 3-4 month hiatus where you have all these new tracks. They’re ready to go, but you can’t play most of them as you’ve got to build up to the album’s release. This, though, is the point where I can take all that music, present it live to the audience and finally see their reactions in the clubs and arenas to this long-awaited music.

As Atlantis is taking place over one weekend, will you be in and out of Australia or will you get to have some leisure time Down Under?
It’s a quick one! I’ll arrive Australia, play three shows over the weekend, then head back out to the rest of my tour.

If you do get time off while on tour, what do you like to get up to?
On the rarer occasions that I do have time off while on tour, I like to do exactly the same type of things that I anticipate most people like to do. I often check out attractions and interesting places people have recommended… Seek out cool bars, restaurants etc – those kinds of things.

Are you able to take advantage of the travel aspect of touring?
Very infrequently unfortunately. It’s a great Catch 22, especially when you love travelling and visiting new places as much as I do. You arrive. You’re immediately hit with all these impressions of places that – in an ideal world – you’d be able to check out in a heartbeat. The chances are though, if you’re really lucky, you might just catch sight of them on the ride back to the airport. It’s often the kid-at-the-candy-store-window dynamic two to three times a week, every week for life!

Throughout 25 years, the demand for you at the biggest festivals and club nights has never wavered; in all those years, what have been the most memorable experiences?
A lot of times, I feel like the most memorable experiences were also the most recent experiences. It’s all part of the symbiotic relationship the artist shares with the audience. You come off stage with the memory as fresh as it can possibly be. That’s mixed in with the high you feel having just performed, and you’re like “that has to be one of the best nights ever”. There are, of course, some places that I’ve played a lot that have formed into “group experiences” that might rank as the most memorable. Arguably cumulatively as a DJ, Amnesia, Ibiza could be my most memorable. I’ve played there six or seven times a year, every year since the late ’90s. Man and club bonded for life!

Berlin has given us many great names in electronic music, but you’re one of the most recognised and legendary. Do you get to spend much time in the city now?
Yes, relative to everywhere else, I spend a lot of downtime in Berlin. It tends to be in fits and spurts, though, like a week here, 10 days there, and then I could be out on tour for six weeks straight.

What’s the music scene like in Berlin at the moment?
The club scene is extremely healthy and has been so for five or so years now. I think it may only ever have been more vibrant once or maybe twice before. I’m thinking about the early and then late ’90s. With the evolution of the bigger clubs, it’s been put right back at the centre of things. The world’s eyes are on it!

What are your favourite venues in the city?
Personally, probably Kesselhaus. We do a VANDIT Records night there every year in December. After the 12-month run, it’s always the last big night for the crew and myself before the year-end holidays. It’s big enough to get a really great atmosphere but intimate enough so you feel you can see each and every clubber’s face. That’s a good balance and it makes Kesselhaus a great club!

If we spent a weekend in Berlin, what should we get up to? Are there any bars, eateries or attractions you would recommend?
I’d kick off with a visit to Hofbräu Berlin for an authentic German beer garden, Bavarian food and live music experience outside of Oktoberfest! From the Tiergarten to the Reichstag to the East Side Gallery, seeing Berlin’s sights is best-achieved by walking or taking one of the many boat tours down the River Spree. No trip is complete without a visit to at least one of Berlin’s many internationally-renowned museums, such as the Pergamon.

Thanks, Paul!
