Performance Space presents a new festival of contemporary art, performance, dance and debate on gender and sexuality in contemporary Australia: 25th October – 1st December 2012.
SEXES explores and celebrates multiple perspectives of sex and sexuality. Performance Space’s SEXES festival will tickle, tantalise and tease audiences with an extensive visual arts exhibition, a new full-length performance work and a new dance work, provocative live art, passionate discussion, keynote lectures, dirty movies, erotic readings and even a danceathon.
Opening the Festival is the SEXES EXHIBITION, featuring 17 contemporary artists including Christian Thompson, Cigdem Aydemir, Eric Bridgeman, John Meade, Julie Rrap, LEVEL, Liam Benson, Luke Parker & Sangeeta Sandrasegar, Marley Dawson, Natalya Hughes, Parachutes for Ladies, Paul Knight, Philip Brophy, Tarryn Gill and Pilar Mata Dupont, The Kingpins, Tracey Moffatt and Gary Hillberg, and Trevor Fry. Traversing photomedia, video, installation, performance, sculpture, collage and participatory encounter, these works will appear across Carriageworks’ public spaces for the duration of the festival.
The second element of the festival is the Live Art Program. Carriageworks will be animated by a series of live performances to extend, contextualise and generally prance around the SEXES themes. Featuring some of Australia’s most thrilling artists, including Atlanta Eke, Fiona McGregor, Maude Davey, Norrie May-Welby, Paul Gazzola, Sarah Coconis and WART, there will be performance tours, an audience clothes-swapping event, intoxicating visions and intimate accostings.
